A stakes race for old guys is such a good idea that Playfair decided to do it twice tonight. The Rocking Chair Handicap will be run in two parts, a 6-furlong dash for a $3,000 purse in the second race, and a mile route for the other spry geezers still on the grounds in the fourth.

This is where horses from 9 to 12 years old try to turn back the clock. It’s not easy separating the oldies from the goodies, but trainer Cindy Hoover has won five races with only 10 starts so she knows how to get her horses in places where they can succeed.

She’s given 9-year-old Primetime Pirate - one of the youngsters in here - 50 days off since he chased a brisk pace in a 6-furlong sprint won in 1:12-4/5.

He’s durable and talented enough. This is his 114th start. The only question is fitness, after the layoff.

He may have to get by on muscle memory.
