Lakeside Overturns Riverside

Great Northern League girls soccer teams needed just one day - their season opener - to discover that this season would be unlike the previous three.

Junior Lacie Wilson scored at 35 minutes and set up junior Suzanne Rieseberg’s game-winning goal at 55 minutes, and Lakeside defeated visiting Riverside 2-1 at Nine Mile Falls on Thursday afternoon to hand the Rams their first loss in GNL history.

The GNL has been Riverside’s domain since its formation in 1997. After undefeated league seasons, the Rams won the State 2A title in 1997, placed third in ‘98 and finished second last season.

Kelly Ostby, at 16 minutes, scored Riverside’s goal.

In other GNL openers, five different players scored as Pullman (1-1) powered to a 5-0 win at Medical Lake (0-1-1)… . Freshmen Jolynn Watson and Jessie Lobdell scored to guide Deer Park (1-1) to a 2-0 win over visiting Chewelah (0-2).

Katie Streeter scored twice, giving her four goals for the season, and Coeur d’Alene (4-0, 1-0) defeated visiting West Valley 5-2 in the Border League. Goals by sisters Erica and Kelly Hauck, 1 minute apart late in the first half, allowed the Vikings to build a 4-1 lead. Amanda Craig and Erin Brumback teamed up to score at 3:30 for the Eagles (1-1, 0-1).

Volleyball

Mead delivered a message as Kari Vagstad had 12 kills and Kelicia Shorts 10 blocks during a 15-10, 15-5, 5-15, 15-7 non-league win at Ferris, the four-time defending Greater Spokane League champion. Whitney Murphy added 15 digs for the Panthers, defending State 4A champions. Nicole Brouillard of the Saxons had a match-high 15 kills… . In another non-leaguer matching GSL teams, Stefanie Ferrette and Katy Schrader had 12 kills apiece, and Schrader and Holly Ridings added 11 digs apiece to guide Shadle Park to a 3-0 win over visiting Rogers. The Highlanders won the third game 16-14 after trailing 8-1. Sarah Abrahamson led Rogers with 12 kills.

Defending State 2A titlist Lakeside plowed ahead into a new GNL season, as junior Jen Barcus totaled 15 kills and five blocks during a 3-0 sweep at Medical Lake. Kate Reome added 20 assists and five digs for the Eagles, who scored the match’s first seven points. Lakeside returns eight players from its championship team. Nicole Jones had six kills and four blocks for the Cardinals… . In other league openers, Leah Dahlin had 16 kills and three blocks in Newport’s 3-1 win at Chewelah. Jill Davis of Chewelah served 100 percent and had two runs of five consecutive service points… . Pullman notched a 3-0 sweep at Deer Park. DP’s Carlena Blake had nine digs.

Brad Schell scored on a breakaway with 23 seconds left Thursday afternoon to lift the Spokane Chiefs to a 5-4 win over the Portland Winter Hawks at the Pepsi Preseason Tournament at the Tri-Cities Coliseum.

Spokane trailed 3-1 after two periods but roared back with four third-period goals.

Tim Smith had one goal and three assists for Spokane, which is 2-1 in exhibition games, all against Portland. Justin Keller, Matt Keith and Chris Heid also scored for the Chiefs. For Keller, it was his fourth goal of the preseason.

Tyler MacKay went the whole way in net for Spokane. Shots and saves were not reported.

The Chiefs play Seattle today at the tournament.
