It’s safe to say no offensive lineman will win the Heisman Trophy. But, if the trophy were awarded to truly the best player, which linemen might be considered?

Strong statement

Major Applewhite came off the bench in relief of Chris Simms to lead No. 5 Texas over Louisiana-Lafayette 52-10. Applewhite, who lost his starting job to Simms in the preseason, entered the game in the first quarter with the Longhorns trailing 10-0 and proceeded to throw for 315 yards and four TDs to seal the win.

Doing it all

Deuce McAllister had 257 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns, including an 87-yard punt return, as No. 19 Mississippi lost to Auburn 35-37.

The other guys

Roger Snyder rushed for 307 yards, averaging 12.8 yards a carry, and scored three touchdowns to lead Washington & Jefferson over Allegheny 54-41.

Jason Johnson and Keith Brooks each rushed for two touchdowns and placekicker Peter Martinez set a school record by scoring 15 points as Western Kentucky routed Tennessee-Martin 71-0. The Western defense allowed only 62 yards of total offense to 649 for the Hilltoppers, second-best in school history.

South Carolina State scored 42 second-half points to beat Savannah State 42-26. Savannah State’s defense held the Bulldogs to 13 yards rushing and 33 yards passing in the first half, but South Carolina State scored 28 points in the third quarter.

R.J. Bowers had 155 yards rushing to set a NCAA Division III record with his 28th straight 100-yard rushing game as Grove City defeated Kenyon 27-21 in overtime.

Brian Westbrook broke Villanova’s scoring record, scoring four touchdowns to lead the Wildcats over Millersville 51-14. The junior running back now has 262 career points.

Streaks and such

Florida State extended its winning streak to 14 in a row and improved its conference record to 63-2 since joining the ACC in 1992… . Marshall’s nation’s best 18-game winning streak ended in a loss to Michigan State… . Two of the longest losing streaks in Division I-AA rest in the unsure hands of MAC teams. Ball State has lost 19 straight and Buffalo 17 in a row.

MAC goes on the attack

Ohio, which defeated Minnesota 23-17, is the third MAC team to beat a Big Ten school in the past two weeks. Toledo beat Penn State 24-6 last week and Western Michigan beat Iowa 27-21 on Saturday.
