Deputies Probe Racial Harassment Complaint

From Staff

Kootenai County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the possible harassment of a local real estate agent.

On Monday, an employee of Marshall Mend Realty reported receiving harassing phone calls and e-mail messages, according to a sheriff’s report. The messages contained racial slurs toward the Jewish faith and referenced the recent Aryan Nations civil trial.

Mend, who is Jewish, also is a member of the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations. The trial pitted the racist Aryan Nations against the Southern Poverty Law Center and resulted in a $6.3 million judgment against Aryan Nations founder Richard Butler.

Deputies are investigating the messages and have stepped up patrols of the real estate office, the sheriff’s report said.
