Note To Gardeners: Cover Your Tomatoes
The start of autumn Friday morning couldn’t come at a more fitting time: Frost will truly be on the pumpkin in the Inland Northwest.
A record low of 30 degrees is expected at dawn Friday.
The autumnal equinox will follow at 10:27 a.m.
“Friday morning looks kind of spooky, kind of cool,” said forecaster Rocky Pelatti of the National Weather Service. “I’ve got tomatoes that are still green out there.”
As if the forecast isn’t bad enough for gardens, the cold air is expected to stick around for a second dip below 32 degrees on Saturday morning. Pelatti said there’s a chance it could be even colder.
The coldest temperatures are forecast for outlying areas and North Idaho. Friday morning’s lows are expected to be 26 in Sandpoint, 27 in Coeur d’Alene and 28 in Colville.
The culprit is a mass of cold air dropping south out of the Yukon in the wake of Wednesday’s rainstorm, Pelatti said.
