Vandals Nab Another Shutout

The Idaho women’s soccer team continued its torrid run Friday as the Vandals scored their fourth consecutive shutout victory, the latest a 5-0 decision over visiting Nevada.

Emily Nelson was the star on offense, scoring three goals for the Vandals (6-4). Idaho’s Jenell Miller registered four saves in the first half and Kim Carey five in the second half.

Holly Davidson and Andrea King scored the other goals for Idaho. Megan Cummings had two assists.

Playing its home opener after six matches on the road, Washington State scored three goals in the first half and defeated Gonzaga 4-1 in a non-league women’s match in Pullman.

The Cougars (5-2) took control early with a goal by Natalie Kehl (Mead High) in the 11th minute of play. She added an assist in the second half. Katrina Stroh, the Cougars’ leading scorer, added two goals and co-captain Deka DeWitt scored the other.

Sara Streufert (University High) scored for Gonzaga (2-6) in the 73rd minute.

The high-flying North Idaho College teams had a win and a tie in NWAACC play against Bellevue, at Coeur d’Alene.

Four NIC players - Bryn Devlin, Chrissy Walsh, Jana Franchini and Sara Wagner - scored in the first game as the Cardinals women (4-1-1, 3-1 NWAACC) scored a 4-0 victory.

The men’s game ended 1-1 as Lucas Rakow scored in the 75th minute to lift the Cardinals (4-0-2, 4-0-1) into the tie.

CCS played well in the beginning and at the end, but not so well in the middle as Edmonds defeated the Sasquatch 4-1 in an NWAACC men’s match at Spokane Falls Community College.

Dustin Allbery managed the only goal for Spokane (3-1). Trailing 3-0 in the 78th minute, Allbery took a pass from Robert Crump in the penalty area and volleyed it in.

In the women’s match, also at SFCC, Edmonds defeated the Sasquatch 2-1.

Amanda Chase, with an assist from Kristi Hines, scored in the 36th minute for Spokane (2-2), making the score 1-1.

Edmonds (4-4-1) picked up the game-winner when Erin Navin scored in the 78th minute.

Vollebyall

Idaho defeated Gonzaga 15-9, 11-15, 15-13, 15-2 in a non-league match at the Martin Centre.

After splitting the first two games, the match remained close in the third. After several lead changes, Idaho prevailed 15-13 and took that momentum into the fourth game, building a 7-0 lead en route to the one-sided victory.

Regan Butler led the Vandals (8-2) with a match-high 21 kills and 12 digs. Delaney Menell and Anna-Marie Hammond also had double figures in kills with 11 and 10 respectively.

Heather Osberg’s 12 kills led the Bulldogs (4-8), and Britt Whiting added 11 kills.

North Idaho College lost four matches on the second day of the Valley of the Sun Tournament in Phoenix.

NIC lost to Eastern Arizona (15-7, 15-3), Yavapai (15-3, 15-6), Phoenix (15-2, 15-7) and Scottsdale (15-3, 15-5).

Community Colleges of Spokane went 1-3 in the same tournament.

CCS defeated Pima Community College 13-15, 16-14, 15-13 then lost to Arizona Western (15-4, 15-5), Glendale (16-14, 15-5) and Mesa (15-9, 7-15, 15-11).
