Eastern’S Martin Honored
Eastern Washington defensive end Josh Martin was selected Big Sky Conference football defensive player of the week Monday after helping the Eagles earn a 27-24 double-overtime win over Weber State on Saturday.
The Clarkston High School graduate had seven tackles, including a career-high three quarterback sacks.
The Eagles (2-1) are ranked in three separate I-AA polls. Sports Network ranks them 18th, while USA Today/ESPN lists them 19th. The Eagles are ranked 12th in Football Gazette.
Idaho Vandals running back Willie Alderson, who broke the 100-yard barrier for the third time in four games with a 113-yard effort against Washington State, was named the Big West Conference offensive player of the week.
Alderson had 41 yards rushing in the fourth quarter during the Vandals’ comeback. He added five catches for 38 yards in Idaho’s 38-34 win over the Cougars.
Volleyball
Eastern Washington’s Robyn Sonju-Felder was chosen Big Sky player of the week after leading the Eagles to home sweeps of Texas-Pan American, Northern Arizona and Cal State Northridge last week.
Sonju-Felder finished the week with a .500 hitting percentage, including .833 against Texas-Pan American. In the match, the Eagles set a Big Sky record for highest hitting percentage at .627. Sonju-Felder also totaled 14 kills against Cal State Northridge.
Track and field
Former WSU distance runner Bernard Lagat placed second in his heat of the men’s 1,500-meter prelims and advanced to the semifinals at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
Lagat, running for his home country of Kenya, was clocked at 3 minutes, 40.42 seconds.
High school volleyball
Amy Oates had eight kills and eight service aces to spark the North Central Indians to a 15-4, 15-8, 15-11 non-league victory over the visiting Central Valley Bears.
Katie Rogers led Central Valley with eight kills.
Shelly McCoy tallied 18 digs for the Indians, including 10 in the third game.
Jen Barcus and Katie Ticker each had three blocks to spark the Lakeside Eagles to a 15-6, 15-4, 15-4 Great Northern League victory over the Pullman Greyhounds in Pullman.
Barcus added 10 kills while teammate Kate Reome finished with 27 assists. Katie Sparrell had eight digs to pace Pullman.
