Leslie Steele Coeur d’Alene

Memorial Mass for Leslie W. “Les” Steele, 63, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Steele, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Monday.

He graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1954. He served with the Army and was stationed in Iceland.

After his military discharge he moved back to the Coeur d’Alene area and attended North Idaho College and the University of Idaho.

He married Joan Garvey in 1962.

Mr. Steele worked as a diver and pile buck for Chase Enterprises in Coeur d’Alene for eight years until opening Les Steele Tree Service in 1969. His business served the Coeur d’Alene and Spokane areas.

He was involved with youth soccer as an assistant coach. He also was head coach in the Coeur d’Alene girls’ and women’s softball leagues.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jeneen Fehrnstrom of Coeur d’Alene, and KayDee Steele and Theresa Allen, both of Spokane; his 100-year-old mother, Geneva Steele of Coeur d’Alene; and two grandchildren.

James Hagman Priest Lake, Idaho

No service will be held for James “Jim” Hagman, 82, at his request.

Mr. Hagman, who was born in Priest River, Idaho, died Sunday following an extended illness.

He grew up in Priest River and graduated from high school there in 1936. He graduated in 1941 from the University of Idaho with a business and accounting degree.

Mr. Hagman served with the Third Army Division in the European Theater during World War II.

He returned to the Inland Northwest and worked as a carpenter, building houses with his father in Chelan, Wash., and Spokane. He moved to Priest Lake in 1957 and developed Hagman Resort.

Mr. Hagman operated the resort and continued working as an area carpenter and was active in outdoor activities.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth “Betty”; a daughter, Arley Sue Hagman of Priest Lake; two sons, Gary Hagman of Coeur d’Alene and Ken Hagman of Priest Lake; and two grandsons.

Richard Barnes Priest Lake, Idaho

Service for Richard Lee “Dick” Barnes, 64, will be at 11 a.m. today at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Priest Lake. Burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery in Priest Lake.

Mr. Barnes, who was born in Reardan, Wash., died Tuesday.

He graduated from Davenport (Wash.) High School.

Mr. Barnes served in the Army for four years and was stationed in Germany.

He and his parents moved to Priest Lake in 1959 and they purchased the Outlet Resort, which they operated until 1989.

In 1989 Mr. Barnes and his son, John, purchased the Rose Hurst Ranch, which he operated until his death.

Mr. Barnes was a member of the Priest Lake Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Florence; two sons, John and Jerry Barnes, both of Priest Lake; and two grandsons.

Wanna Hendershot Cheney

Visitation for Wanna H. (Hunter) Hendershot, 76, will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Cheney Funeral Chapel. Service will follow at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Hendershot, who was born in Jasper, Fla., died Wednesday.

She graduated from Southern University andomMemo: location of school not available in 1946 married William Hendershot.

They lived in Philadelphia until moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1984 and had recently moved to Cheney.

Mrs. Hendershot was a homemaker and a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Survivors include her husband; five sons, William Hendershot Jr. of Spokane, James Hendershot of Coeur d’Alene, and Richard, Thomas and Joseph Hendershot, all of Doylestown, Pa.; three daughters, Terry Madesen of Cheney, Deborah McKinney of Lakeview, Idaho, and Josie Hendershot of Bethlehem, Pa.; a brother, Edwin Hendershot of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, LaVerne Newberg of Jasper; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Amy May Spokane

No service will be held for Amy E. May, 84, at her request. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 64-year Spokane resident, Mrs. May died Wednesday. She was born in Butte, Mont.

She graduated from St. Luke’s Nursing School in 1939 and worked as a registered nurse. She retired in 1978.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, Charles; two daughters, Donna Gibson of Spokane and Susie Parker of Phoenix; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Shriners Hospital for Children. Joseph `Bud’ Leibrecht Spokane

Visitation for Joseph C. “Bud” Leibrecht, 78, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Private graveside service will be Saturday at Fairmount Memorial Park. Memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Leibrecht died Tuesday.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1940 and served in the Army during World War II in the European Theater. He received the Victory Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

He owned and operated the family farm southwest of Spokane.

Mr. Leibrecht worked for Spokane Armature from 1965 to 1970 and also owned Imperial Auto Electric from 1970 to 1984.

He was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Moose Lodge and the Spokane Fly Fisherman’s Club.

Survivors include his wife of 11 years, Bernadine; a son, Ron Leibrecht, and two daughters, Lanette Donaldson and Barbara Keller, all of Spokane; a stepson, Robert Hodge of Portland; two stepdaughters, Saundra Dormaier and Jean Mindermann, both of Spokane; a sister, Helen Theis of Moses Lake; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Marjorie Gustafson Spokane

Service for Marjorie M. Gustafson, 85, will be at 1 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South.

Mrs. Gustafson, who was born in Hillyard, died Tuesday.

She graduated from Pasco High School in 1934.

Before she married Arthur Gustafson, she worked as a nanny.

Mrs. Gustafson was a 53-year Spokane resident and a homemaker.

Her husband of 50 years died in 1997.

Survivors include two daughters, Sheryl Rupert of Spokane and Judy Bell of Everett; a son, Jan Gustafson of Spokane; a sister, Dorothy Hogan of Deer Park; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Donald Kohlstaedt Spokane

Memorial service for Donald “Don” Kohlstaedt, 86, was Thursday at Central United Methodist Church. Private burial was at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

A 65-year Spokane resident, Mr. Kohlstaedt died Sunday. He was born in Rosalia, Wash.

He worked as a copy holder for The Spokesman-Review.

He was a member of Central United Methodist Church.

Mr. Kohlstaedt is survived by a sister, Evelyn Wickliffe of San Lorenzo, Calif.

Mary (Guilmet) Graham Chewelah, Wash.

Service for Mary Ellen (Guilmet) Graham, 84, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Long-Term Care Chapel. Burial will follow at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Jump Off Joe, Wash. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Graham, who was born in Victoria, British Columbia, died Monday.

At the age of 16 she became involved in politics in the Seattle area, organizing the first unions and serving on many political campaigns.

She married Julian Graham in 1940 and they moved to Pelican, Alaska, in 1950 and to Seattle in 1962. Mrs. Graham moved to the Addy, Wash., area in 1966. She later moved to Chewelah.

She had been a resident of St. Joseph Nursing Home in Chewelah for the past two years.

Mrs. Graham was a homemaker and a member of the Addy Homemakers Club.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Sheldon Graham of Addy and Ken Graham of Sequim, Wash.; two daughters, Julie Keigley of Spokane and Kathleen Taylor of Addy; two brothers, Mike and Arthur Guilmet, both of Sequim; seven grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.

Marlin Reed Spokane

No service will be held for Marlin Reed, 84, at his request. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 55-year Spokane resident, Mr. Reed died Tuesday. He was born in Webster, Iowa.

He graduated from Webster High School in 1933.

Mr. Reed worked as a cook in the Navy from 1936 to 1940 and from 1944 to 1946.

He later worked as a salesman in the restaurant supply industry.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Evelyn; two sons, Mark Reed of Spokane and Todd Reed of Oregon; three daughters, Kathryn Klaue of Spokane, Myrna Droll of Colorado and Molly Holtz of Iowa; 16 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Dorothy Horley Spokane

Visitation for Dorothy G. Horley, 86, will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Service will follow at 1 p.m. in the Sunset Mausoleum at Fairmount Memorial Park.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mrs. Horley died Wednesday.

She worked as an accountant for M&M Jewelers.

Her husband, George, died in 1986.

Survivors include four granddaughters, Laural, Kristen, Shannon and Leslie; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Jack Ross Nine Mile Falls

Visitation for Jack H. Ross, 76, will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

A lifetime Spokane resident, Mr. Ross died Tuesday.

He graduated from North Central High School and served in the Army during World War II.

He worked as a clerk for the Postal Service.

Mr. Ross was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 45.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Phyllis; two sons, Timothy Ross of Albuquerque, N.M., and Larry Ross of Alaska; two daughters, Cheri Ross of Medical Lake and Kristina Bryant of Seattle; two sisters, Betty Burtness and Ruth Jerome, both of Spokane; a brother, Paul Ross of Rathdrum, Idaho; two half-brothers, Robert and Glee; three half-sisters, Naomi, Gayle and Kay; eight grandchildren.

Mildred VanBrunt Cheney

Memorial service for Mildred E. VanBrunt, 96, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cheney United Methodist Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. VanBrunt, who was born in Rocklyn, Wash., died Monday.

She was a longtime Spokane County resident and a 39-year Cheney resident.

Mrs. VanBrunt received her teaching degree from Cheney Normal School and taught elementary school for 14 years in Spokane County.

She married John VanBrunt and was a homemaker. They operated a cattle ranch in Clarkia, Idaho.

During the 1950s she taught GED classes.

She was a member of Cheney United Methodist Church, Amber Grange and the Martha Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.

Her husband died in 1978.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Ruth Amos of Azalea, Ore.; and a granddaughter.

Clarence Franklin Sr. Spokane

Service for Clarence Edwin Franklin Sr., 90, was held Wednesday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Burial was at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Franklin, who was born in Weatherford, Texas, died Sunday.

He and his wife, Nettie, lived in Glendale, Calif., where he worked as a painter.

They moved to Spokane in 1990.

He was a member of Valley Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years; a daughter, Mary Schappals of Spokane; a son, Clarence Franklin Jr. of Palm Springs, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
