Dewitt Gives Cougars Big Assist

The Washington State Cougars won their fourth straight women’s soccer game Friday.

Give Deka DeWitt a big assist.

DeWitt scored two goals and assisted on another as the Cougars (7-2) defeated Montana 4-2 in a non-league game in Pullman.

Natalie Kehl scored the go-ahead goal off a DeWitt assist in the 76th minute.

It was the 15th assist of DeWitt’s career, breaking the school record.

DeWitt scored WSU’s first goal of the game, hitting unassisted from 30 yards out. DeWitt also scored WSU’s final goal, booting in a Rachel Rodrick pass.

Jessica Allen, making her first start for WSU, also scored, booting in a pass from Liz Duncan.

Jodi Campbell and Amy Wronski scored for the Grizzlies (6-3-1).

Tami Bennett and Theresa Wagner scored twice each as Washington dominated Gonzaga 7-0 in a non-league game in Seattle.

Malia Arrant had a goal and an assist for the Huskies (9-1). Washington outshot the Bulldogs 36-4.

Men’s soccer

Jason Kuska scored a hat trick to lead Gonzaga past Western Washington 5-0 in the Bulldogs’ home opener at Martin Field.

The Bulldogs (5-4) scored three goals within 1 minute, 26 seconds late in the second half to put away the Division II Vikings (6-3) in the nonleague matchup.

The Bulldogs had the only goal they needed in the first half after WWU helped Gonzaga along by scoring an own goal.

Abbis Fardinia scored the final goal for the Bulldogs.

Volleyball

LaToya Harris pounded down 21 kills as Washington State notched its first Pacific-10 victory, destroying Washington 15-2, 15-7, 15-13 in Seattle.

Harris, who hit .704 for the match, tallied 10 digs and three aces.

Chelsie Schafer added 16 kills and seven digs. Zanda Bautre contributed 12 digs and 11 kills for the Cougars (10-4, 1-4).

Lisa Underhill had 17 kills for the Huskies (4-8, 0-5).

Gonzaga opened its West Coast Conference schedule with a tough 13-15, 15-5, 11-15, 15-5, 15-4 loss to visiting Santa Clara.

Heather Osberg led the Bulldogs (4-10, 0-1) with 16 kills and 11 digs. Britt Whiting chipped in 10 kills, and Heather Signor had 18 digs for Gonzaga.

Ynez Carrasco had 22 kills, 14 digs and three aces for the Broncos (12-1, 1-0), and Becky Potter totaled 18 kills and 20 digs.

Jenny Kniss’ 18 kills and 17 digs helped Idaho win its Big West opener, beating UC Irvine 15-10, 12-15, 15-5, 15-5 in Moscow.

Anna-Marie Hammond had 13 kills and 12 blocks, and Jackie Gallagher and Regan Butler added 12 kills each for the Vandals (10-2, 0-1).

Heather Kniss racked up 10 kills, 16 digs and six blocks for Idaho.

Larissa Carter’s 20 kills, 11 digs and two blocks led the Anteaters (6-5, 1-3), and Chanda McLeod had 17 kills and 12 digs.

Puget Sound, ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division III West Region, remained undefeated by beating Whitworth 15-13, 15-5, 13-15, 15-6 in a Northwest Conference match.

The Loggers (11-0, 5-0) broke a 13-13 tie in the first game with a pair of aces, and racked up a 12-1 lead in the second game.

Kristen Turner’s 18 kills led the Pirates (8-6, 3-2). Turner had eight kills in the third game.

Karen Elmgren led the Loggers with 30 kills.
