Saturday’s games
Braves 8, Mets 0: At Atlanta, Jaret Wright (9-5) stayed undefeated in July and Johnny Estrada homered to lead the Braves past New York and spoil the Mets debut of Kris Benson. The Mets acquired Benson from Pittsburgh a day earlier, hoping he would solidify their rotation. Pitching against the Braves for third straight start, Benson (8-9) lasted only five innings and lost for the second time in a row.
Expos 8, Marlins 5: At Miami, Terrmel Sledge hit his first career grand slam after Paul Lo Duca hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat for Florida to lead Montreal over the Marlins.
Phillies 4, Cubs 3: At Chicago, Mike Lieberthal and Bobby Abreu each hit two-run homers following Cubs errors, helping Philadelphia end its five-game losing skid. Kevin Millwood (9-6) pitched 6 2/3 solid innings to pick up the win.
Reds 3-0, Astros 2-8: At Cincinnati, Carlos Beltran and Mike Lamb hit ninth-inning homers, sending Houston to an 8-0 victory over the Reds that ended a draining day. It started with the Reds beating the Astros 3-2 in 13 innings, finishing a game suspended overnight because of rain. Jason LaRue’s RBI double ended the first game.
Pirates 4, Brewers 1: At Milwaukee, Ryan Vogelsong started for the traded Kris Benson and threw five strong innings to lead Pittsburgh past the Brewers. Vogelsong (3-7) gave up three hits and one run in his first start since June 23.
Padres 3, Dodgers 2: At San Diego, Phil Nevin’s infield single drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, and the Padres edged Los Angeles. The Padres pulled within 2 1/2 games of first-place Los Angeles in the West.
Giants 8, Cardinals 7: At San Francisco, Ray Durham’s bases-loaded triple capped the Giants’ eight-run first inning, and San Francisco held on for a victory over St. Louis. Matt Morris (11-7) got just two outs in a disastrous start for St. Louis.
Rockies 8, Diamondbacks 4: At Denver, Shawn Estes (11-4) pitched six solid innings and Colorado took advantage of Arizona’s shoddy defense in a five-run sixth inning to beat the Diamondbacks.
