Crews get a handle on Canyon fire

SMITHS FERRY, Idaho – Scores of firefighters fanned out along the north and east flanks of the Canyon fire in west-central Idaho on Monday, finally containing the blaze a day before expected.

The fire had smoldered since a July 19 lightning strike before it erupted on Saturday on private timber land just south of Smiths Ferry.

The fire was contained late Monday at 95 acres.
