Emeralds handle Indians
EUGENE, Ore. – The Eugene Emeralds used a pair of three-run innings to put away the Spokane Indians 6-2 on Monday night in Northwest League baseball action.
The loss drops Spokane two games behind first-place Tri-City, heading into tonight’s All-Star Game at Avista Stadium.
The Indians jumped out to an early lead, but it would be a brief one.
Tim Hulett doubled to lead off the game and Michael Mask followed with an RBI single to put Spokane up 1-0.
The Emeralds bounced back in their half of the first to take the lead for good.
Ernesto Garay led off with an infield single. With one out, Spokane starter Justin Lensch nailed Brett Burnham with a pitch. Colt Morgan doubled to drive in a pair, and Billy Hogan stepped up and tripled to score Morgan for a 3-1 lead.
The Emeralds (16-29) knocked Lensch (2-4) from the game in the bottom of the third.
Morton and Hogan both walked to open the inning, and Dale singled to load the bases. Marcos Herrera relieved Lensch and allowed all three baserunners to score.
Orlando Diaz plated the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly and Trino Aguilar and Chris Kolkhorst, the No. 8 and No. 9 hitters, delivered RBI singles.
Spokane’s final tally came in the top of the ninth inning when Hulett singled in Jim Fasano, who reached base on a leadoff single.
Jose Cespedes (1-0) earned the win for Eugene with two innings of shutout relief.
