Red Sox 6, Devil Rays 3: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Tim Wakefield pitched seven solid innings and David McCarty hit a three-run homer to lead Boston over Tampa Bay. Kevin Youkilis had a two-run double during a three-run fifth for the Red Sox. Wakefield (7-6), celebrating his 38th birthday, gave up three runs, four hits, four walks and struck out three. The knuckleballer is 10-1 all-time against Tampa Bay.

Blue Jays 6, Indians, 1: At Toronto, Ted Lilly won for the first time in more than a month and Vernon Wells hit a three-run homer in the first inning before leaving with a calf injury as Toronto beat Cleveland. Lilly (8-7) won for the first time in six starts since June 28, allowing one run and three hits in seven innings. Wells fouled a ball of his left calf in the fifth inning and was listed as day to day with a bruise.
