Katherine Brower

Age: 29

From: Seattle, now living in the Peaceful Valley neighborhood of Spokane.

College: Bachelor of Science in Art, Gonzaga University, 2003; Kreielsheimer Fellowship, Gonzaga University, 2004.

Current show: During August, Brower is showing about 10 of her recent works at Catarina Winery, 905 N. Washington St. An artist reception is tonight between 7 and 10 p.m.

Day job: Co-owner with husband of Strange Design Productions.

Influences: Regionally: Robert Gilmore of Spokane. Historically: Walter Murch, Pablo Picasso, Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Artemesia Gentileschi, Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, Egon Schiele, Claude Monet, Diego Rivera and Toulouse Lauterec. “I am also largely influenced by such musical artists as Trey Anastasio of Phish.”

Kind of art: Oil paintings, and pencil and conte drawings of landscapes, figures and still lifes.

Process: “I work from life,” Brower said. “For example, my self-portrait was painted using a mirror.”

What is your intent with your art? “I hope to make beautiful paintings for people to enjoy.”

What’s ahead: In September, Brower will be moving to rural eastern Washington and setting up her studio above an antique car garage in the small town of Hunters, nestled in the foothills of the Huckleberry Mountains along the Columbia River. “I am excited about moving there, as I am anticipating a new found freedom in working from the countryside, creating a springboard for my work.”
