Spokane’s Munsen to fight Williams on CdA Resort card
Spokane cruiserweight Luke Munsen (16-2) will take on former world champion Arthur Williams (38-12-1) of Las Vegas, Nev., in the featured fight of a six-bout card Thursday at the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel’s House of Fury in Worley, Idaho.
Munsen recently lost a controversial fight to Chad Van Sickle in an event televised by ESPN.
Also on the card, Munsen’s younger brother, Jeremy, will begin his professional career against fellow rookie Cainan Monroe of Arlee, Mont., in a four-round heavyweight fight.
College scene
“The Washington State University men’s and women’s golf teams signed one junior college man and two high school women for the 2004-2005 season.
The men’s team signed Chris Collins from Lead, S.D., who is transferring from Pima Community College in Tucson, Ariz. He earned second-team, all-Arizona Conference honors and first-team, all-region honors last year as a freshman with a 71.5 stroke average.
The women’s team signed Ami Larson and Tracy Broders. Larson graduated from Camas (Wash.) High, where she placed fourth in the State 3A tournament her senior season and was named Greater St. Helens League player of the year. Broders, a recent grad of Tigard (Ore.) High, earned all-league honors each of her four varsity seasons and was named to the first-team list on three occasions.
“Sam Hall, a graduate of Colfax High, has signed a letter of intent to play baseball for San Jose State University in the upcoming 2004-2005 season. Hall played two years at Big Bend Community College and was a two-time, second-team all-Eastern Region outfielder at Big Bend.
“The Community Colleges of Spokane men’s basketball program signed five players for the 2004-2005 season. The incoming freshmen are: Selah (Wash.) High grad Erik Bell; Middleton High (Caldwell, Idaho) grad Jordan Hammond; Big Nine Conference player of the year Jeremy Mangum of Davis High in Yakima; and Northeast A player of the year Joel Ryman of Northwest Christian High. CCS also signed Jayson Rayson, a graduate of Lewis and Clark High.
“Washington State University’s women’s volleyball team was predicted to finish tied for ninth in the Pacific-10 Conference in the 2004 preseason poll. Southern California was selected to repeat as conference champions while UCLA was picked to finish second. The rest of the preseason Pac-10 poll: Washington, Stanford, California, Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon State, and Oregon tied for ninth with WSU.
Washington was picked to finish seventh in the 2004 AVCA USA Today/CSTV preseason poll. The Pac-10 picked up five of the top 10 spots and six overall places in the preseason poll that predicts the top 25 teams in the nation. The order of this year’s poll predicted a first-place finish from USC, followed by Nebraska, UCLA, Florida, Minnesota, Stanford, Washington, Penn State, Pepperdine, California, Colorado State, Georgia Tech, Hawaii, Kansas State, Texas A&M, UC Santa Barbara, Arizona, Loyola Marymount, Illinois, Louisville, Northern Iowa, Santa Clara, Wisconsin, Utah and Notre Dame.
“The 2004 Big West Conference women’s soccer preseason poll has picked the University of Idaho to finish 10th. The preseason poll shows an order of Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, Long Beach State, Pacific, Cal State Northridge, Utah State and Idaho.
“North Idaho College’s annual membership drive is set to kick off in September. Booster Club memberships range from $50 for supporting members to platinum level memberships of $5,000 or more. Packages include various levels of reserved seating, advertising opportunities and season passes. Members also receive a semimonthly newsletter covering Booster Club and NIC athletic news.
Applications are available in the NIC Athletics Office, located inside Christianson Gym. Anyone interested in joining the NIC Booster Club is encouraged to attend the club’s weekly lunch meetings held each Tuesday at noon at the Coeur d’Alene Resort Short Lounge.

Baseball
West Valley High graduate Tyler Hauschild, who played for the Cannons this summer, was named the state’s American Legion scholar/athlete of the year.
The award is based on play on the field, performance in the classroom and service to the community. Hauschild will compete for the national player of the year, an award to be announced later this month.
High schools
A mandatory state rules clinic for North Idaho high school soccer coaches and referees will be held Wednesday at Post Falls High School at 7 p.m. Also, on Monday a similar clinic for volleyball coaches and referees will be held at Coeur d’Alene HS. The refs will meet at 6 p.m. and coaches at 7.
