Galarraga has five hits in minors

SALT LAKE CITY — Andres Galarraga had five hits for the Anaheim Angels’ Triple-A affiliate Friday night.

He singled in all five plate appearances and drove in two runs to lead the Salt Lake Stingers to a 17-3 win over the Edmonton Trappers. The Angels signed him to a minor league contract earlier this month.

Galarraga missed the first four months of the regular season recovering from treatment for his second bout with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He is hitting .350 with 14 RBI in fifteen games for Salt Lake.

He spent the 2003 season with San Francisco, where he hit .301 with 12 home runs and 42 RBIs in 110 games. Known as “The Big Cat,” he also has played for Montreal, St. Louis, Colorado, Atlanta and Texas in his 18-year career.

Galarraga wants to return to the major leagues so he can reach 400 home runs. He has 398, tied with Dale Murphy for 40th on the career list.

Galarraga missed the 1999 season after his initial diagnosis. In November, he had a recurrence, underwent surgery and had a transplant in February that eliminated the disease.
