Huskies top Buckeyes, win invitational

Kim Taylor scored in the 99th minute to lift Washington to a 2-1 overtime victory over 18th-ranked Ohio State as the Huskies won their third straight Husky/Nike Invitational women’s soccer championship in Seattle on Sunday.

Taylor, who assisted on Tina Frimpong’s game-winning goal in Friday’s 2-1 win over ninth-ranked Penn State, was named the tournament’s offensive most valuable player.

The Huskies (2-0) entered the tournament, which included sixth-ranked Portland, as the only unranked team.

Kelley Schweighart staked UW to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 54th minute. The Buckeyes (0-2) knotted the score on a Danielle Dietrich goal with 1:01 left in regulation.

•Meghan Chambers found the net on a rebound kick off her own missed shot as the Montana Grizzlies edged the Washington State Cougars 2-1 in overtime at the Montana Nike Cup in Missoula.

Cailan McCutchan scored at 18:03 to give the Cougars (1-1) a 1-0 lead.

Sariad Faville nailed a shot from 15 yards out to pull Montana (2-0) even in the 77th minute.

The Cougs host 12th-ranked Tennessee on Saturday.

•Mari Gomes scored a pair of unassisted goals, the second one coming at 99:49 as the Wyoming Cowgirls (1-1) rallied past the Eastern Washington Eagles 2-1 in overtime in Laramie, Wyo.

Jennifer McMullen scored her first collegiate goal at the 21:43 mark to give the Eagles (0-1) a 1-0 lead.

•Chelsea Card found the net in the 81st minute to propel the Utah Utes (1-1) to a 2-1 non-conference win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (1-1) in Salt Lake City.

Gonzaga’s Rachael Manning had knotted the score at 1 just 5:13 earlier.

•The Idaho Vandals (0-2) dropped their second straight match at the Montana Nike Cup in Missoula, falling to Denver 2-0.

Both goals by the Pioneers (1-1) came on penalty kicks by Maggie Kirchhoff.

Men’s soccer

Michael Wold scored a goal just nine minutes into the match and the North Idaho Cardinals cruised to a 2-0 non-conference victory over visiting Southwest Oregon.

Lonnie Williams assisted on Wold’s netter.

Garga Caserta capped the Cardinals scoring with an unassisted goal in the 53rd minute.
