Indians add coaches

From staff and wire reports

Former major league baseball players Mark Whiten and Glenn Abbott have joined the coaching staff of the Spokane Indians of the short-season Class A Northwest League, the Texas Rangers announced Tuesday.

Whiten will be the hitting coach, Abbott the pitching coach.

Whiten played for 11 seasons with eight different teams, but is best remembered for a game on Sept. 7, 1993, at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati. In the second game of a double-header, he hit four home runs and drove in 12 of the St. Louis Cardinals’ 15 runs. Both accomplishments tied big league records.

During his career, Whiten hit 105 home runs, including 25 in 1993. A career .259 hitter, the switch-hitting Whiten drove in 423 runs. He played briefly for the Seattle Mariners in 1996, hitting 12 homers, driving in 33 runs and batting .300 in 40 games

Abbott was a starting pitcher for Seattle for six years. In 1977, his first year in Seattle, Abbott went 12-13 with a 4.45 earned-run average. In 1980 he went 12-12 with a 4.10 ERA.

In 11 seasons, Abbott compiled a 62-83 record with a 4.39 ERA.
