Beavers cruise past Buffaloes

Chris Stephens had a career-high 27 points and freshman Sasa Cuic scored 22 to lead the Oregon State Beavers to a 98-87 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday in Corvallis, Ore.

Marcus Hall had 22 of his 29 points in the first half for Colorado (2-2).

Jason Fontenet had 20 points, including four 3-pointers, for the Beavers (4-2). J.S. Nash added 13 points and four steals.

Oregon State shot 64 percent from the field in the first half and 59 percent for the game.

Oregon State led 38-22 after Fontenet made two free throws. That’s when Hall took over, scoring the Buffaloes’ final 18 points of the first half.

The sophomore point guard outscored the Beavers 18-7 during the nearly five minute stretch and cut the score to 45-40 by halftime.

Oregon 75, Vanderbilt 65: Ian Crosswhite had 16 points and 11 rebounds to give the Ducks (4-0) a victory over the Commodores (4-3) in the annual Pape Jam at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland.

Jordan Kent, coach Ernie Kent’s son, had a key 3-pointer that made it 64-50 and capped a 21-8 Oregon run as Vanderbilt went cold.

Aaron Brooks had 11 points and Brandon Lincoln added 10 more for Oregon.

Julian Terrell and Mario Moore each had 14 points for Vanderbilt .

California 80, Fairleigh Dickinson 66: Richard Midgley scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Bears (4-2) past the Knights (1-4) in Berkeley, Calif.

Midgley, who set a new career best for the second time in two weeks, shot 11 for 15 from the floor for the Golden Bears , including 6 for 9 on 3-pointers.

Rod Benson added 16 points for the Bears, who made a season-best 63 percent of their shots.

Gordon Klaiber hit four 3-pointers and scored 22 points for the Knights.

Arizona State 67, Cal State Northridge 66: Steve Moore hit three free throws with 14 seconds left to lift the Sun Devils (5-1) to a win over the Matadors (1-5) in Tempe, Ariz.

Northridge led 66-64 when Moore was fouled on a 3-point attempt. Northridge had a last chance, but Austin Waggener’s putback attempt rimmed out just before the buzzer.

Ike Diogu led Arizona State with 25 points and 13 rebounds while Moore added 20.

Ian Boylan led Northridge with 26 points and Davin White scored 14.

Southern Cal 87, Brigham Young 82: Lodrick Stewart scored 22 points as the Trojans (2-2) withstood a spirited second-half effort from the Cougars (1-5) in Los Angeles.

USC led by 17 early in the second half before BYU went on a 20-3 run, tying the game at 56 with 10:50 left.

Balderson led the Cougars, who are off to their worst start since beginning 1-7 in 1997, with 22 points.
