Reality version of ‘Gilligan’s Island’ almost as good as fiction

Two teams of castaways compete on TBS'

Not every television sitcom could easily be transformed into a reality show. It just doesn’t work. Even though elements of shows such as “The Cosby Show” and “Seinfeld” seemed so lifelike, they were completely scripted and relied heavily on the genius minds of the creators. That is why I was hesitant to watch one network’s attempts to bring a 1970s classic sitcom into the reality realm – it just did not seem plausible.

“The Real Gilligan’s Island” premiered on Nov. 30 on TBS. On the new “Island,” two teams of castaways – that’s right, two Mary Anns, two Professors, two chubby Skippers, and so on – dress up as their favorite characters to compete for a grand prize. Not only do these teams resemble the cast of the original show, they actually are the characters; real-life millionaires and farm girls were chosen to participate, and two B-actresses, Nicole Eggert and Rachel Hunter, will fill Ginger’s shoes. That’s an interesting twist!

Without diving too far into the details, this show reminds me of “Survivor,” except the cast has better costumes and a cooler theme song. They compete in silly challenges until only one set of “castaways” is left. I’m not sure that I will watch this one religiously, but it is definitely worth checking out.

On last week’s episode, one of the Skippers had a heart attack and had to be sent home. Talk about a bad omen. Let’s hope that everyone else’s health is status quo, for TBS’ sake.

If island life does not appeal to you, and the thought of wearing the same outfit two days in a row is a near tragedy, perhaps a show about high-end couture will tickle your fancy.

The new reality show “Project Runway,” hosted by lovely Heidi Klum, debuted Wednesday on Bravo. Now, before all the men out there get worked up, I should mention that Klum is fully clothed and the competition is between d-e-s-i-g-n-e-r-s (say it out loud) … not Victoria Secret models. Sorry to disappoint.

Twelve designers will compete for a photo spread in Elle magazine and a mentorship with Banana Republic. While my fashion skills are mediocre, and I couldn’t sew to save my pants, I would happily work with a Banana Republic representative … just as long as she gave me lots of free clothes and gift certificates for my friends. ‘Tis the holiday season after all, and Banana Republic should be more giving – especially to an avid shopper like me.

If the men are saddened by the lack of skin on “Runway,” they always can tune into “The Swan” (Mondays, Fox), where each week the contestants shed their old clothes and former selves to go through massive transformations to become pageant contenders.

I must be getting soft in my old age, because I have gotten teary eyed a lot lately while watching this show. Some women really have it hard, with their missing teeth, facial hair, stretch marks and cab-door ears. I’m not making fun; I was overjoyed with their transformations and was seriously touched by their stories.

Well, that’s all I have space to write about this week. Tune in next week for a reality TV rumor check-up.
