Dorothy Clemons

Othello, Wash.

Memorial service for Dorothy J. “Dot” Clemons, 84, will be today at 1:30 p.m. at Shadle Park Presbyterian Church. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Clemons, who died Thursday, was born in Spokane.

While still attending Rogers High School, she became bookkeeper for her father’s Chevrolet dealership in Chewelah, Wash.There she met her husband, Lester Clemons, and they were married in 1940. Later they lived 17 years in Belmont, Wash., where she was active in the Oakesdale Presbyterian church and a key member of the Pine Creek Club.

She lived in Wilbur, Coulee Dam, Ritzville, Moses Lake and Fairfield and was active in the communities. She and her husband have lived in Othello for the past 21 years.

She loved games, particularly cards. She was known by many as the Cookie Queen and, for years her Friday bread-baking attracted a widening circle of drop-ins for dinner.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Eileen Wilmot of Spokane; four sons, Neil of Newport, Wash., John of Spokane, Bill of Edmonds, Wash., and Randy of Erie, Pa.; two sisters, Edna Larson of Spokane and Gin Rollis of Renton, Wash; nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Memorial gifts be made to the Othello Presbyterian Church sound system fund.

Vivian Tareski

Cheney

Funeral Mass for Vivian N. Tareski, 93, will be today at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Cheney. Interment will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Cheney Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Tareski, who died Thursday, was born in North Dakota.

She attended high school and nursing school in Bottineau, N.D. She worked as a registered nurse with special-needs patients and also at the San Haven Tuberculosis Sanitarium in North Dakota.

She married Raymond Tareski in 1933. Due to her husband’s health, they sold the family farm in Bottineau in 1968 and moved to Cheney, where she worked at Eastern State Hospital and the Cheney Medical Center.

She was active in the Cheney Food and Clothing Bank and Cheney Seniors Club.

Her husband died in 1976.

Survivors include two sons, David Tareski of Cheney and Vale Tareski of Fargo, N.D.; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cheney Food and Clothing Bank.

Heskett Baker Jr.

Spokane

Funeral for Heskett John Baker Jr., 83, will be today at 2 p.m. at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Baker, who died Dec. 20, was born in Roseburg, Ore. He graduated from high school there in 1940, and married his high school sweetheart, Virginia.

He served two and a half years as a pharmacist mate in the Navy during World War II.

He lived in Eugene, Ore., until moving to Spokane in 1964.

Mr. Baker worked in the grocery business most of his adult life. He managed stores for McKay’s in Oregon, Rosauers and Starbuck’s in Spokane. After he retired in 1986, he kept active in the grocery business by working for food brokerages resetting stores.

He enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling to the Oregon Coast with his family.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Paula Lobdell and Janet Bowman; a sister, Alida ; five grandchildren and five great-grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Mary Higashi

Cheney

Vigil for Mary M. Higashi, 69, will be today at 7 p.m. at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church.

Mrs. Higashi died Dec. 19.

She was born and raised in Tacoma and graduated from Lincoln High School there. She married Shozo Higashi in 1955, and they moved to Spokane.

Mrs. Higashi worked part time as a bookkeeper and seamstress. In 1975 she went to work full time in the accounting department at Spokane Produce, retiring this year.

She was a member of the Japanese American Citizens League. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting, gardening and needlepoint, and was an avid reader.

Her husband died in 2003.

Survivors include two daughters, Jacqueline Higashi-Poynter of Mount Vernon, Wash., and Lisa Lauderdale of Nine Mile Falls; a son, Craig Higashi of Cheney; two sisters, Naomi Barry and Annette Minafo; and nine grandchildren.

Rowena Knudson

Sandpoint

Visitation for Rowena Undean Knudson, 99, will be Wednesday from noon to 6 p.m., at the Coffelt Moon Chapel in Sandpoint. Funeral services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery. Coffelt Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Knudson, who was born in Harlan, Iowa, died Friday.

She moved to Spokane in 1911 with her family and to Sandpoint in 1917. She attended school in Bonner County and married Henry Knudson in Sandpoint. For many years she worked for Jack Adams at the Economy Grocery Store as a grocery clerk.

Mrs. Knudson was a longtime member of the Sandpoint First Lutheran Church. She ran the church clothing room from 1972 until her health forced her to give up her position.

Her husband died in 1974.

Survivors include two daughters, Undean Rainey and Aletha Sawhill of Sandpoint; eight grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.

Marsha Cooney

Spokane

Funeral for Marsha Lynn Cooney, 60, will be today at 1 p.m. at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Cooney, who died Tuesday, was born in Spokane.

She attended Pasadena Park Elementary and graduated from West Valley High School. She attended the University of Puget Sound and graduated from Gonzaga University with bachelor’s degrees in English literature and art.

Mrs. Cooney was employed by Lightolier as a senior sales representative in commercial lighting for the past 20 years.

Survivors include three children, Stacy Campbell of Sacramento, Calif., Chris Jameson of Spokane and Paula Jameson of Long Beach, Calif.; her parents, Leon and Persha Poffenroth of Spokane; a stepsister, Marcine Christner of Sacramento; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Horizon Hospice or Cancer Care Northwest.

Maxine ‘Mickey’ Hoagland

Spokane

Viewing for Maxine “Mickey” B. Hoagland, 76, will be today from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Riplinger Funeral Home. Funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with burial at Greenwood Memorial Terrace Cemetery.

Mrs. Hoagland, who was born in Burlington, N.C, died Friday. She moved to Spokane in 1944.

She worked as a waitress. She loved animals and traveling and also enjoyed gospel and country music.

Survivors include six children, Carole Hurt, Janis Fink, Joan Ressa, Dan Wolfley, Mike Scriven and Jim Hoagland; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Betty Yirak

Hartline, Wash.

Memorial service for Betty Lee Yirak, 78, will be Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. at Church of Christ, Grand Coulee. Neptune Society is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Yirak, who was born in Oklahoma City, died Dec. 18. She had been a resident of the Almira-Hartline area since 1968.

She attended one year of college and worked for the Almira post office. She was the postmaster of the Hartline Post Office from 1983 until her retirement in 1988. She also worked at the Almira School.

Mrs. Yirak was a member of the Church of Christ. She enjoyed cooking and sewing.

Survivors include her husband, Charles; two daughters, Elizabeth Young of Fruit Heights, Utah, and Joan Zimbelman of Almira; four sons, David Yirak of Canyon, Texas, Alan Yirak of Harrington, Wash., Jim Yirak of Okinawa, Japan, and Paul Yirak of Spokane; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Carlos Mendoza

Spokane

Visitation for Carlos M. Mendoza, 65, will be Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. followed by rosary at 7 p.m. at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Requiem Mass will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be at Fairmount Cemetery.

Mr. Mendoza, who was born in Douglas, Ariz., died Friday. He was a resident of Spokane for 24 years.

He worked as a baker, and was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Roberta;six children, Carlos Mendoza of Higley, Ariz., Miguel-Angel Mendoza, Ana Kruger and Maria Carrier, all of Spokane, and Rosario and Joseph Mendoza, both of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three sisters, Delia Rucker and Terri Mendoza of Douglas, Ariz., and Hortencia Mendoza of Santa Fe, N.M.; and three grandchildren.

Mildred Carlin

Post Falls

Funeral was held Monday for Mildred Alice Carlin, 82, She will be interned at Joplin Cemetery in Boise.

Mrs. Carlin, who was born in Crystal, Idaho, died Wednesday.

She was a lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a missionary for the Coeur d’Alene Stake.

She worked for many years for Panhandle Health Department as a senior companion.

Mrs. Carlin was preceded in death by her husband, Don.

Survivors include two sons, Steve of Marsing, Idaho, and Ed of Whitebird, Idaho; two daughters, Bev Dalrymple of Meridian, Idaho, and Juanita Reynolds of Post Falls; a stepson, Darrel of Cove, Ore.; four sisters; two brothers; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

John Ladd

Kellogg

Funeral for Jack Ladd, 80, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kellogg. Burial will be at Pine Valley Cemetery in Halfway, Ore. Shoshone Funeral Services is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ladd, who was born in Wardner, Idaho, died Thursday.

He graduated for Kellogg High School and worked for the Kellogg YMCA until its closure. Mr. Ladd was a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church and the Kellogg-Wardner Lions Club.

He is survived by one sister, Sister Marie Emmeline Ladd of Spokane; four nieces and one nephew.

Adolph Elde

Moses Lake

Service for Aldolph B. Elde, 91, will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Nicoles Funeral Chapel in Ephrata, Wash.

Mr. Elde, a 50-year resident of Moses Lake, died Thursday. He was born in Grass Range, Mont.

He worked as a builder in construction. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy.

Survivors include four children, Florence McKenzie, Lillian Robinson, Virginia Patchell and Beverly Pier; and two sisters, Esther Hansen and Evelyn Jossi.

Barbra Yuknawicz

Coeur d’Alene

At her request, there will be no service for Barbra Yuknawicz, 65. English Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Yuknawicz, who was born in Dayton, Ohio, died Dec. 21.

She lived in Dayton for more than 40 years, and moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1997. She spent her life caring for and serving others. She loved animals, people and the Lord.

Survivors include her sister, Judy Guy, and a half-brother, Donnie Davis, both of Colorado.

Daniel Stackhouse

Coeur d’Alene

Funeral for Daniel Bruce Stackhouse, 49, was held Monday. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery. English Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stackhouse, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died Dec. 20.

As a young boy, he was active in Boy Scouts. He played football and was a star lineman.

He studied mechanics at North Idaho College before his enlistment in the Air Force, where he served for six years. After his military service, he took an electrician’s course.

He is survived by his mother, Vivian of Coeur d’Alene; a son, Tobias Stackhouse of Monroe, Wash.

Loretta Ralston

Post Falls

Memorial service will be Tuesday for Loretta Elane Ralston, 68, at 10 a.m. at the Slab Inn in Post Falls. English Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ralston, who was born in Whitewood, S.D., died Dec. 21.

A longtime resident of Post Falls, she worked as a service coordinator for Peters Homes in Post Falls.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel Ralston; a daughter, Dacie Lewis of Carlsbad, Calif.; two brothers Joel and Richard Eatherton, both of Post Falls; and two sisters, Lorrie Saidow of Reno, Nev., and Harriet Burnam of Spruce Grove, Alberta.

Harold Odeen

Spokane

Memorial service for Harold Robert Odeen, 78, will be today at 2 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mr. Odeen, who was born in Geddes, S.D., died Wednesday.

He drove a Candy and Tobacco Truck route for 11 years and worked for Imperial Lanes Bowling Alley for 30 years before retiring in 1988.

Mr. Odeen enjoyed fishing and some boating, gardening and crossword books.

Survivors include his wife of more than 57 years, Virginia; six children, Sandra Stoeser, Ruby Wright, David Odeen, Judy Kuhlmann and Janet Priddy, all of Spokane, and Norma Grey of Cusick, Wash.; two sisters, Darlene Newman and Joan Sanders, both of Spokane; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

James Brunetti

Post Falls

Memorial service for James J. Brunetti will be today at 1 p.m. at the Coeur d’Alene Seventh-day Adventist Church. Yates Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Brunetti, who was born in Ogden, Utah, died Dec. 21.

He worked for 28 years at the Ogden Defense Depot, retiring in 1972. After his wife’s retirement in 1974, the couple moved to Spangle, and to Post Falls in 1989.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Linda Lee and Kay Trelease of Boise; a son, Darrell Brunetti of Post Falls; a brother, Angelo of Ogden; and three sisters, Marie Casebolt, Ellen Thompson and Kaye Thompson, all of Ogden.
