Shadow stop Rangers

The Spokesman-Review

Dustin Allberry scored the game’s lone goal in the 40th minute off an assist from Brett Hite and goal keeper Shaun Kalnasy made three saves as the Spokane Shadow soccer team got a crucial win by shutting out the Abbotsford Rangers 1-0 in Abbotsford, B.C.

After helping the Shadow by knocking off the first-place Cascade Surge 2-0 on Saturday, the Rangers fired 11 shots at the Spokane net, but only three were on target and Kalnasy, an All-Conference selection last season, was up to the task.

The win moves Spokane (9-4-1, 28 points) to within two points of the Surge (10-3, 30 points) in the Premier Development League’s Northwest Division.

The two teams meet in the Shadow’s next game, a July 16 encounter at Joe Albi Stadium in a game that has renewed importance in the battle for first.

American Legion

The El Segundo Blue scored four times in the second, gave up the lead in the top of the seventh, then came back to score twice to beat the Puyallup South Hill Pirates 6-5 at Shadle Park High’s Al K. Jackson Field and advance to the championship of the Senior American Legion Fourth of July Tournament.

Puyallup’s night game against the Spokane Valley Cannons was called due to a time limit, the game ending 6-6.

In other games at Jackson Field, the Spokane Blue Devils scored nine times in the bottom of the second en route to a 9-1 win that was called in the fifth due to the eight-run rule; the Cannons’ first game saw them score four times in the bottom of the sixth to earn a 5-1 win over South Kitsap.

Today’s championship pits the Blue against Buddy Bay Embroidery at 1:30 p.m. The third-place game sees the Spokane Blue Devils against the Spokane Northstars at 11 a.m. Both games are at Jackson Field.

AppleSox cruise past RiverHawks

Oregon State player Cole Gillespie hit a two-run home run in the first and finished 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs as the Wenatchee AppleSox upended the Spokane RiverHawks 10-2 at Larson Field in Moses Lake, Wash.

Travis Kane earned the win, going six innings and allowing four hits, one run, striking out six and walking one.

Spokane’s Matt Robinson hit a two-run triple in the fifth.

Spokane’s Steve Hudson passed Rathdrum’s Doyle Braton on lap 18 and cruised the rest of the way to his second career Northwest Modified Series race victory Saturday at Ephrata Raceway Park.

Post Falls’ Steve Shaffer finished second and Greg Ochs of Colville took third in the 50 lap main.
