Sunday’s games

The Spokesman-Review

Mets 6, Yankees 5: Ty Wigginton’s second homer snapped an eighth-inning tie, Richard Hidalgo connected for the fourth straight game and the Mets finished off their first Subway Series sweep with a win over the visiting Yankees. The surprising Mets took four of six from their crosstown rivals this year after going 0-6 in 2003. It’s the first time they’ve won the season series since interleague play began in 1997.

Athletics 9, Giants 6: Eric Byrnes hit a pair of three-run homers for a career-high six RBIs, and Mark Mulder (11-2) won his career-best ninth straight decision as Oakland won in San Francisco. Jerome Williams (7-6) allowed four earned runs on seven hits in four innings, struck out six and walked one for the Giants.

Rangers 18, Astros 3: Mark Teixeira and Hank Blalock became the first Rangers to hit grand slams in the same game, lifting Texas to a blowout win in Houston. Teixeira added a solo shot in the eighth, Kevin Mench had two homers among his career-high four hits and Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run shot for the Rangers.

Dodgers 6, Angels 2: Jeff Weaver took a shutout into the seventh inning and Paul Lo Duca drove in three runs, leading Los Angeles to a win in Anaheim. Weaver allowed eight hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings

Cubs 2, White Sox 1: Pinch-hitter Todd Walker drew a bases-loaded walk from Damaso Marte in the ninth inning to give the Cubs a sweep of the visiting White Sox. Derrek Lee homered for the Cubs against Mark Buehrle in the second inning, but Carlos Lee tied it with a ninth-inning homer.

Braves 10, Red Sox 4: Derek Lowe gave up eight runs in 4 1/3 innings, and theAtlanta rode a nine-run fifth to beat visiting Boston. Lowe (6-8) was given a 4-0 lead but couldn’t hold it. He has lost three straight starts, allowing 17 earned runs as his ERA soared to 6.02.

Reds 5, Indians 4 (11): Tim Hummel’s run-scoring single in the 11th inning sent Cincinnati to a win over visiting Cleveland. Indians relievers blew a three-run lead in the eighth, then teetered on the edge of a loss until the Reds finally pushed them over in extra innings.

Marlins 4, Devil Rays 3: A.J. Burnett won for the first time in nearly two years, Miguel Cabrera hit his 20th homer and Florida snapped a four-game losing streak with a win over visiting Tampa Bay. Burnett gave up six hits and three runs in 7 2/3 innings and won for the first time since Aug. 18, 2002.

Diamondbacks 6, Twins 2: Randy Johnson threw a five-hitter for his 10th victory and Al Pedrique got his first win as Arizona manager as the Diamondbacks beat visiting Minnesota. Shea Hillenbrand drove in three runs with a triple and home run for Arizona.

Padres 7, Royals 5: David Wells had another impressive start as San Diego beat visiting Kansas City. But the win was tainted as Wells (4-5) fouled a ball off his lower right leg in the sixth inning. He was tended to by a trainer and didn’t go out for the seventh.

Rockies 10, Tigers 8: Vinny Castilla celebrated his 37th birthday with four RBIs and Royce Clayton also drove in four to help Colorado tie a club record by erasing an eight-run deficit in a win over visiting Detroit.

Expos 6, Blue Jays 4: Shawn Hill got his first major league win, pitching five strong innings to lead Montreal past Toronto in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Hill (1-1) struck out six and allowed one run on six hits in five-plus innings in his second big league start.

Sunday’s National League game

Pirates 6, Brewers 2: Chris Stynes broke out of a season-long slump by driving in three runs with a homer and two-run double and Pittsburgh beat visiting Milwaukee to run its longest winning streak since 1996 to nine games.
