Kristian Burkland
Spokane
Memorial service for Kristian S. Burkland, 25, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Opportunity Presbyterian Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Burkland, who was born in Seattle, died Friday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
He grew up in Spokane, graduating in 1996 with honors from Central Valley High School, and attended Washington State University, graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in biology.
Mr. Burkland was in his fourth year of medical school at the Chicago School of Osteopathic Medicine.
He enjoyed playing football, wrestling and rugby. He was an avid snow and water skier and enjoyed fly fishing and the outdoors.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Julie and Walter Balek; his father, Kris Burkland; two sisters, Misty Mulligan and Elizabeth Burkland; and two stepsisters, Karen and Joyce Balek.
A memorial scholarship is being arranged in his name at the Chicago School of Osteopathic Medicine. Memorial contributions may be made to that fund in care of Sterling Savings Bank, Second floor, 111 N. Wall St., Spokane, WA 99201.
Roy Jones Jr.
Lovelock, Nev.
Service for Roy Avery Jones Jr., 66, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Jones, who was born in Spokane, died June 17.
He lived in Bonners Ferry before serving in the Army as a military policeman. He was stationed in Oakland, Calif., and then Shell, France. He received the Good Conduct Medal, and the Expert Badge and Sharpshooters Badge in pistol and rifle.
Mr. Jones returned to Bonners Ferry and married Judith McVey.
He was a jack-of-all-trades, and had worked as a mechanic, policeman, logger and long-haul trucker. He also worked in various capacities in the mining industry, including mine/mill plant supervisor.
Mr. Jones moved to Lovelock, Nev., approximately 15 years ago and began hauling for Fundis. He received the two- and three-years safety awards and an embroidered jacket in recognition of his outstanding performance and safe driving.
Mr. Jones retired in 2002 from Fundis due to illness.
He was known as a joker.
His wife preceded him in death.
Survivors include two children, Kenneth Jones of Salt Lake City and Ginger-Sue Hilliard of Lovelock; two sisters, Sue Felch of Spokane and Judy Trice of Bonners Ferry; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Fern Harbaugh
Spokane
Funeral for Fern C. Harbaugh, 91, will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Fairmount Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Harbaugh, who was born in Spokane, died Saturday.
She was an egg candler for Washington Co-op and then was the bookkeeper for Park Road IGA, which she and her husband owned for many years.
She was active in the Shrine and enjoyed playing golf and traveling.
Her husband of 66 years, Frank, died in 2003.
Survivors include her sister-in-law, Maxine Harbaugh; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Shriners Hospital for Children.
Larry Rice
Newport, Wash.
Family potluck reception for Larry Steven Rice, 54, will be Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the residence of Jeannett and Gerald Brown, 5541 Spring Valley Road, Newport, Wash. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Rice, a longtime area resident, died last Thursday. He was born in Hickman, Ky.
He attended Western Kentucky University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in history and geography.
He worked at the Pine River Management Group.
He enjoyed photography, astrology, hiking, camping and taking drives in the country.
Survivors include two brothers, Bill and Fred Rice, both of Kentucky.
Howard Schoepflin
Walla Walla
A potluck celebration of the life of Howard Schoepflin, 89, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Moscow Seventh-day Adventist Church. Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Schoepflin, who was born in Edwall, Wash., died last Thursday. His family moved to Viola, Idaho, in 1919. His parents were dairy farmers, and he and his brother followed in the same career. He graduated from Upper Columbia Academy in Spangle, in 1935 and married Constance Carlson in 1939. She died in 1968.
Mr. Schoepflin married Sylvia Yeatts in 1969, and they lived on their farm in Viola until moving to Walla Walla in 2003.
The couple had been employed at the University of Idaho until their retirement in 1980.
He was honored with the Grassman of the Year award in the 1950s, and helped build the Viola Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he served as an officer. He also helped build the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Moscow and helped underwrite the furnishings for the building.
Mr. Schoepflin liked to build ponds and received an honorary Rotarian designation for the construction of the two ponds that make up the centerpiece of the arboretum at UI.Mr.Schoepflin was an accomplished musician and provided music at his church and for numerous funerals.
He enjoyed gardening, working in the woods, raising chickens and maintaining habitat for wild geese near his ponds.
Survivors include his wife; four children, Karen Hagen of Genesee, Idaho, Consuelo Weitz of Viola, James Schoepflin of Pullman and Frederick Schoepflin of Seattle; three stepchildren, Merilyn Welch of Eugene, Ore., Daniel Yeatts of Spokane and Raymond Yeatts of Troy, Idaho; two sisters, Ellen Wagner of Farmington, Wash., and Lillian Coppernoll of Gresham, Ore.; and numerous grandchildren.
Phyllis Boren
Spokane
Memorial service for Phyllis Eleanor (Paynter) Boren, will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Lewiston. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Boren, who was born at Fort Lewis, Wash., died July 1. She was a longtime resident of Spokane.
She attended Lewis and Clark High School and the University of Idaho, where she received a bachelor’s degree in education. She was also a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
She married Charles Boren in 1946.
Mrs. Boren taught English and girls physical education at Clarkston High School for 30 years.
She retired to Clarkston, where she was a member of the Bryden Canyon Golf Club.
She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Lewiston, where she was active in the guild and church choir.
She enjoyed playing golf and bridge.
Her husband died in 1999.
Survivors include three children, Barb Adams of Spirit Lake, Idaho, Ed Boren of Spokane Valley and Polly Marsh of Mead; a brother, Dick Paynter of LaConner, Wash.; two sisters, Kay Earnst of Tacoma and Ann Brown of Edmonds, Wash.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Doris (Ellis) Hassing
Spokane
Memorial service for Doris Evelyn (Ellis) Hassing, 81, will be July 31 at 2 p.m. at Erdman Funeral Home in Goldendale, Wash.
Mrs. Hassing, who was born in Widnes, England, died last Thursday. She was a resident of Spokane for 27 years.
She met Archie Brown during World War II, and the couple later married and made their home in the United States. He died five years after their marriage.
Two years later she married Joe Hassing. The couple purchased the Goldendale John Deere dealership, which they operated for more than 20 years.
Soon after her husband’s death, Mrs. Hassing moved to Spokane to be near her children.
She was involved with the Chamber of Commerce, American Business Women’s Association, Soroptimists, Poetry Scribes, the Roman Catholic Church and the Republican Party.
Survivors include two children, Steve Hassing and Glynis Tucker; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Raymond Greene Jr.
Sandpoint
Memorial service for Raymond T. Greene Jr., 85, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint. The service will also include a remembrance for his wife, Julie, who died in 1994.
Mr. Greene, who was born in Los Angeles, died July 3.
He grew up in Mackay, Idaho, and attended Hill Military Academy in Oregon and the University of Idaho in Moscow.
His college studies were interrupted while he served in the Army in France during World War II. He received some leave after being injured in combat and met his future wife, a Belgian named Julie Pimay.
He returned to the Mackay area after the war and lived there briefly with his wife. He then completed his education and received a law degree and moved to Sandpoint in 1947.
Mr. Greene practiced law in Bonner County until retiring in 2000 at the age of 80.
He was involved in supporting and helping fellow veterans.
Survivors include six children, Raymond, Bruce, Teresa, Dale, Greg and Roland; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Fairfax “Jim” James
Spokane
Memorial service for Fairfax Riddel “Jim” James, 79, will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.
Mr. James, who was born in Norfolk, Va., died Saturday.
He served in the Army with the 80th Division Infantry, 3rd Army, under Gen. George Patton. As a combat infantryman, he received the Bronze Star and an honorable discharge in 1945.
He then enlisted in the Air Force in 1951 and retired as a master sergeant in 1968.
Upon retirement from the armed services, he worked in sales and service for Metropolitan Refining Co. He was the representative of the water-treatment arm for the firm.
Mr. James was a member of the El Katif Shrine, the Moonshriners unit, and Scottish Rite and was a lifetime member of Millwood Masonic Lodge 249 and the Valley Shrine Club.
His wife, Wilma, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two sons, Jerry and Tom; two stepdaughters Joan Corless and Patti Yamashita; a stepson Curt Sowre; and 13 grandchildren.

Etta Silsbee
Spokane
Service for Etta Mae Silsbee, 90, will be at a later date. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Silsbee, who died last Thursday, was born in Spokane.
She was an early-day resident of the Spokane Valley and a member of the Spokane Valley Pioneers.
She was a homemaker.
Her husband preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sisters, Nadine Blumer of Spokane and Elsie Kirkpatrick of Veradale; and a brother, Milton St. John of Greenacres.
Byron Bouten
Spokane
Memorial service for Byron Jerome Bouten, 53, will be today at 10 a.m. at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park.
Mr. Bouten, a lifelong resident of Spokane, died Saturday.
Survivors include two sisters, Debbie Hodin of Loon Lake, Wash., and Vicki Showalter of Minneapolis; and two brothers, Ted and Mel Bouten.
Margaret Simon
Twin Lakes, Idaho
Graveside service for Margaret Simon, 98, will be today at 1 p.m. at Pinegrove Cemetery in Rathdrum, Idaho, with a celebration of her life at 2 p.m. at Rathdrum Methodist Church. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Simon died Sunday. She and her twin sister were born in Evanston, Ill.
Mrs. Simon was one of the first in her area to bob her hair and was a flapper during the Roaring 1920s.
She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in business from Northwestern University and then worked as a securities analyst for Continental Bank in Chicago.
She married Robert Simon in 1932, and the couple had three children. Due to health problems, they left Chicago and moved to North Idaho in 1952.
The couple lived in Twin Lakes for more than 40 years, and she was known as “mom” at the lake.
She was active in her community.
Her husband preceded her in death.
Survivors include two children, Carol Harrison and Bruce Simon; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Harold Erfurth
Spokane
Funeral for Harold W. Erfurth, 87, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Heritage Funeral Home.
Mr. Erfurth died Monday.
Born near Fort Wright, he grew up in Spokane and Cheney, graduating from Cheney High School.
Mr. Erfurth served in the Air Force. Upon returning to the area, he began a career as a civil service employee, retiring in the late 1960s.
After his retirement he became an independent businessman.
He enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Wilma; two children, John and Stephen Erfurth; four grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Mable Wooley
Spokane
Graveside service for Mable H. Wooley, 81, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Fairmount Memorial Park. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Wooley, who died Friday, was a resident of Spokane County for 57 years.
She worked for Pacific Northwest Bell for 16 years as an operator.
Her husband, John Wooley, died in 1995.
Survivors include one son and three grandsons.
