‘Drew Carey’ comes back to life
Now here comes a show that’s so unnecessary, so unwanted, such a waste of money that, well, it could be a government project.
Tonight at 9, ABC brings back “The Drew Carey Show.”
I can’t even say how long it’s been since we last saw Drew and Mimi and company. It was on for years after I stopped watching.
This once inventive, refreshing, upstart sitcom became tired and crass and desperate. So, of course, ABC is bringing it back for a summer run.
Actually, it’s no more ABC’s idea than it is the viewer’s. Heck, probably Carey himself would rather be doing something else. But there’s a contract and a whole pile of money at stake, and no doubt syndication deals, so — all together now — Cleveland rocks! Again! Two episodes every Wednesday night.
In the first episode, “things get ugly” when Drew and Oswald compete to fix up their moms with the same eligible widower. The only saving grace, such as it is, is that their moms are Marion Ross and Adrienne Barbeau.
Then, at 9:30, Drew goes overboard when he coaches Gus (Matthew Josten) at soccer and becomes attracted to another troubled young woman.
Then at 10 ABC rolls out a reality show called “The Ultimate Love Test.”
