‘Queer Eye’ cleared path for ‘Blow Out’

“Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” (Bravo, Tuesdays) is back for another season of amazing heterosexual makeovers. That’s great news for all of the fashionably challenged boyfriends out there, but my question is: Does this experiment really work?

I bet if we followed up with a few of last season’s “projects,” we would find them wearing their old hockey jerseys, drinking tall glasses of Milwaukee’s best while sitting on spaghetti-stained La-Z-Boys in front of their televisions. Wait, isn’t that where the turquoise chaise longue used to sit? And what happened to the Feng Shui theme they were going for?

Regardless of whether the Fab Five have been successful in their mission to reinvent the fashion hazards of the world, the show is a hit and has opened the doors for other gay-centric reality shows to take a chance at stealing the spotlight. Who better to do that than famous (and flamboyant) Hollywood hairstylist Jonathan Antin, whose work has graced the big screens and his perfect coiffures have sashayed down the red carpet.

In his new reality series “Blow Out,” Antin, with help from his team of hair specialists (aka beautiful egomaniacs), will set out to open a hot new salon in Beverly Hills and try to become the best in an already overcrowded and “over-blown” market. We can expect to see catfights, hair pulling and boyfriend stealing – and that’s just between the men. “Blow Out” premieres Tuesday on Bravo – let’s see what happens when these beauticians stop pretending to be nice and start getting real.
