Drive into downtown Coeur d’Alene this summer and you can’t miss the herd of colorful moose that has taken residence in the city. While the Lake City is no stranger to the occasional stray moose that wanders down from Fernan Saddle, the recent migration is no act of nature, but rather of the creative and civic-minded folks who normally populate the town.

The No Moose Left Behind public art project is a fund-raiser for the EXCEL Foundation, a nonprofit that supports innovative educational projects within the Coeur d’Alene School District. Each of the 26 life-size fiberglass moose is sponsored by a local business or organization, decorated by a local artist and will be auctioned Sept. 25 at the Coeur d’Alene Resort.

Until then, the moose herd is among the people and Handle Extra invites you to vote for your favorite moose. Photos of the moose are identified by name, artist, sponsor and location. You also can visit the moose at our online gallery at www.spokane7.com/arts/moose.

The winning moose and artist will be announced in the July 2 edition of 7 and featured in a Spokesman-Review article on July 4.

To vote, visit the online gallery or call (208) 765-7129 to cast your voice vote. Voting ends at midnight June 27.
