GU’s Thibault earns honorable mention All-America honors
Gonzaga University sophomore catcher Kiel Thibault has been named an honorable mention All-American by collegebaseballinsider.com.
Thibault, the West Coast Conference Player of the Year, hit .424 overall to win the WCC batting title while hitting .432 in league play. The .424 average was the second-highest in school history and the fifth-best mark in WCC history as the sophomore from Jerome, Idaho, led the conference with 87 hits.
In addition to being named the WCC Player of the Year, Thibault was also named first-team catcher.
Gonzaga finished the regular season with a 24-27 overall record including a 16-11 mark in WCC play.
College scene
Lindsay Murphy of Spokane has been selected to receive the Edmund J. Yarwood Dean’s Honor Student Award at Eastern Washington University.
The award is presented to graduating seniors who have achieved academic excellence and have also demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities to EWU and the community.
Murphy graduated in 2000 from Mead High School where she participated in varsity volleyball, track and field, Associated Student Body, National Honor Society and Young Life. She went on to attend the University of Oregon, where she was a three-year starter and scholar-athlete in volleyball. Murphy was also named to the All-Pac-10 first team for academics.
At Eastern, Murphy has been on the Big Sky Conference academic team. She achieved her 1,000th career dig in October of 2003 and recently graduated summa cum laude from EWU with a B.A. in English literature.
“Washington State University’s Erin Patterson was named to the All-Pac-10 women’s rowing team.
Patterson, a senior from Sumner, Washington, added to her list of 2003-2004 season accomplishments. In addition to her conference honor, Patterson earned a spot on the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-America second team and the CRCA All-West Region first team. Patterson was a member of the Cougars’ varsity-8 crew that finished 14th in the nation.
The Cougars rowing team is coming off a historic 2004 season as the team, led by a third-place finish from the second varsity-8 crew, finished the NCAA Championships in ninth place last month.
WSU’s Danny Breurck earned a spot on the All-Pac-10 men’s team.
“Whitworth College swimmer Cory Bergman has been named to the 2004 CoSIDA Men’s At-Large College Division Academic All-America team as a second-team selection.
Bergman, a junior from Bellingham, has a 3.97 grade point average and majors in biology. He helped the Pirates win their second consecutive Northwest Conference title this season and finished eleventh at the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. He was the NWC champion in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events and a member of four conference-winning relay teams. He finished fifth in the 200 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships and also competed on four Pirate relays that scored.
“Former Community Colleges of Spokane women’s soccer player Toni Hart signed a letter of intent to play soccer for Warner Pacific in Portland, Oregon.
Marathon
At the second running of the North Olympic Discovery Marathon in Port Angeles, Wash., on June 13, Spokane Valley’s Lori Buratto, 33, was the overall women’s marathon winner with a time of 3:16.12.
