Thousands without power after line fails

Boise Thousands of customers in southwestern Idaho were without power for up to two hours Wednesday evening after a transmission line from Idaho Power Co.’s Hells Canyon generating complex failed. Spokesman Dennis Lopez said the outages were limited because customers complied with a request to turn off high-usage appliances like air conditioners, washers and dryers and because the utility was able to purchase surplus power from others to fill the void. The selective blackouts in Ada, Canyon and Payette counties were imposed when Idaho Power could not meet peak demand of 2,700 megawatts and had to cut that load by 130 megawatts. Idaho Power serves over 400,000 customers from Ontario, Ore., to Blackfoot and from the Nevada line north to Riggins.
