The Spokesman-Review

Rangers 8, Astros 7: At Arlington, Texas, Hank Blalock matched a career high with four hits, including the go-ahead homer in the eighth inning, and Texas beat Houston for its eighth straight win. Blalock went 4 for 5 and his 18th homer came with two outs off Dan Miceli (3-3). He’s hitting .528 (28 of 53) over his last 15 games.

Mets 9, Yankees 3: At New York, Al Leiter escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and the Mets beat up rookie Brad Halsey in a six-run fourth that propelled them past the Yankees in the opener of the Subway Series at Yankee Stadium.

Phillies 9, Red Sox 2: At Boston, Jim Thome hit his major league-leading 26th home run and Philadelphia took advantage of a season-high four Boston errors to score five unearned runs and beat the Red Sox . Thome’s homer was his 14th of the month, one shy of the franchise record set by Cy Williams in May 1923.

White Sox 6, Cubs 3: At Chicago, Paul Konerko and Joe Crede homered in a five-run third to back a solid six-inning effort from rookie right-hander Felix Diaz (1-1) as the White Sox doubled up the visiting Cubs.

Athletics 8, Giants 7 (10): At Oakland, Calif., Marco Scutaro singled in Bobby Kielty for the winning run in the 10th inning, and the Athletics snapped San Francisco’s seven-game win streak. Octavio Dotel (1-0) blew a save – the A’s 15th this year – in his Oakland debut, but pitched 2 2/3 innings for the win.

Blue Jays 10, Expos 5: At Toronto, Miguel Batista (6-5) pitched seven strong innings, and Frank Menechino and Reed Johnson hit home runs to lead the Blue Jays past Montreal. Toronto took advantage of three errors by Montreal, which entered the game with the fewest errors in the majors, leading to four unearned runs.

Angels 7, Dodgers 5: At Los Angeles, Garret Anderson’s second two-run homer drove in the go-ahead runs in the eighth, and Vladimir Guerrero added a two-run shot and scored three times to help Anaheim rally for a victory over the slumping Dodgers, who have lost six straight games.

Braves 5, Orioles 0: At Baltimore, Russ Ortiz pitched seven scoreless innings to earn his first victory in June, and Atlanta scored early and late in a win over the Orioles. Ortiz (7-6) allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out four. He was 0-2 in four starts this month.

Devil Rays 6, Marlins 4: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Carl Crawford drove in three runs, including a go-ahead RBI double in the seventh, and Tampa Bay beat visiting Florida to tie a major league record with its 13th straight interleague victory. The Devil Rays also became the first team in major league history to climb above .500 at any point in a season in which they were 18 games below.

Cardinals 3, Royals 1 (10): At Kansas City, Mo., Edgar Renteria’s RBI single drove in Albert Pujols with the tiebreaking run in the 10th inning and lifted St. Louis past the Royals.

Indians 4, Rockies 3 (12): At Cleveland, Ben Broussard lined a game-winning double in the 12th inning to give the Indians a victory over Colorado. Ronnie Belliard, signed in the offseason as a free agent after being released by the Rockies, went 4 for 5 for Cleveland, which out-hit Colorado 17-10.

Brewers 7, Twins 2: At Minneapolis, Victor Santos won for the fourth time in five starts and Jeff Liefer tied a career high with four RBIs to lead Milwaukee over Minnesota. Santos struck out a season-high seven and walked just one.

Tigers 7, Diamondbacks 6: At Detroit, Eric Munson homered leading off the ninth inning to give the Tigers a win over Arizona. Carlos Guillen also homered and drove in four runs for Detroit, which handed Arizona its eighth straight loss.
