Stingy Sting topple Fever
Charlotte Smith-Taylor scored 11 points to help the Charlotte Sting beat the Indiana Fever 46-37 on Saturday night in Charlotte, N.C., in the second-lowest scoring game in WNBA history.
Indiana was 9 of 48 from the field, setting a league record for fewest field goals. Natalie Williams had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Fever while scoring star Tamika Catchings was 1 of 11 from the field and finished with nine points.
Dawn Staley added 10 points for the Sting before leaving the game because of an ankle injury.
Indiana, 0-8 in Charlotte, scored the first six points of the second half to take a 26-23 lead, but the Fever then went scoreless for more than 9 minutes.
Olympia Scott-Richardson hit a turnaround shot in the lane to cap a 11-0 run that gave Charlotte a 34-26 lead with 9:14 left.
The Fever closed to 36-33 on Catchings’ 3-pointer, but Staley hit a bank shot and a 3-pointer with 3:11 to go to make it 41-33.
Miami and Washington played the lowest-scoring game in league history, Miami’s 42-35 victory in 2001.
Silver Stars 80, Mercury 72 (OT): At Phoenix, Agnieszka Bibrzycka made a 3-pointer early in overtime to give San Antonio a five-point lead en route to a victory over the Mercury.
The Silver Stars won their second straight game. On Thursday night, they snapped a franchise-record, eight-game losing streak with a victory over Minnesota.
Shannon Johnson had 13 points and 10 assists for the Silver Stars. Bibrzycka scored with eight points.
