Warriors pound on Cougars, 9-2

The Spokesman-Review

Tyler Best homered twice and Carlos Fisher pitched a complete-game six-hitter Wednesday to guide Lewis-Clark State College to a 9-2 non-conference baseball win over Washington State at Lewiston’s Harris Field.

Best staked the Warriors (51-8) to a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a two-run homer to right-center field off Bryce Chamberlin (7-2). He added his 15th homer of the season in the fourth, a solo blast that preceded Anthony Slagle’s two-run double.

Fisher (7-1) struck out five, walked four and allowed one earned run. The Cougars (26-23) scored on Jason Freeman’s sacrifice fly in the sixth and on an infield single by Zach Kosturos in the seventh.

Track and field

Phil Hinrichs, a distance runner from Pullman, has signed a national letter of intent to attend WSU and compete for the Cougars, coach Rick Sloan announced.

Hinrichs is the State 2A leader in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters. At last year’s state meet, Hinrichs was the runner-up in the 1,600, finished third in the 3,200 and anchored the second-place 1,600 relay team.

The Greyhounds boys won the team championship last year.

Hinrichs also played football and basketball at Pullman High.

Soccer

Nearly 130 soccer teams will participate in the Bill Eisenwinter Hot Shot Tournament this weekend in Coeur d’Alene.

The 13th annual tournament has been renamed in honor of Eisenwinter, the former North Idaho College coach and Coeur d’Alene Sting Soccer Club director who died May 23, 2003, in a car accident near Dubois, Idaho. At the time, he was traveling to the Idaho State Cup to coach the Coeur d’Alene Sting U-19 girls’ team.

Eisenwinter served as coach of club, high school and NIC teams. Approximately 1,500 attended Eisenwinter’s memorial service at NIC’s Schuler Auditorium.

The Hot Shot Tournament, the primary fund-raiser for the Coeur d’Alene Sting program, draws teams from as far away as Alberta, British Columbia, western Washington and Billings, Mont. There are 21 Coeur d’Alene Sting teams entered, ranging from U-11 to U-19. Games will be played nine area sites. The championship matches will be contested Sunday at Canfield and the Coeur d’Alene Soccer Complex.

Matches will begin Friday at 5 p.m. The last matches are scheduled for 3:45 p.m. Sunday.
