Hiring from within, West Valley High has a new football coach.
Craig Whitney, a first-time head coach with a substantial football background, was named to replace Tim Trout. Trout resigned to become vice principal for activities at Shadle Park.
Whitney acknowledged that wins have been few during his six years as an Eagles assistant.
“I’m excited about the opportunity,” he said. “My whole campaign (for the job) was built around developing players and molding them into a team.”
Whitney was a receiver for the University of Montana when the Grizzlies reached the Division I-AA national semifinals in 1989. He spent a season as a graduate assistant coach at UM and assisted at Missoula Sentinel High. He later assisted at Walla Walla Community College for five years before it dropped football.
Whitney assisted at North Central before WV.
Coeur d’Alene catcher Stephanie James will play at North Idaho College, said NIC coach Don Don Williams. James, the class valedictorian, helped the Vikings place second at last week’s State 5A tournament. James also played for the Northwest Wildfire 16U team.
Andrew Mehalechko, a three-year starter at point guard for Post Falls High, has signed a letter of intent to play at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. Mehalechko averaged 8 points, 6.5 assists and 3.5 steals in leading PF to the State 4A tournament for the second time in three years. Mehalechko earned an academic scholarship.
