Church open house on birthday

St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church of Country Homes, 9706 N. Division St., will celebrate its 50th birthday with a brunch and open house next Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

The church first conducted services on June 6, 1954, in a store building at 10117 N. Pend Oreille Highway. That building is now the El Sombrero restaurant on the Newport Highway.

The congregation moved to Whitworth Elementary School on the corner of Division and Hawthorne in September 1959 and then to 9704 N. Division St. on May 28, 1961. In April 1977, construction began for the church’s current building and was completed on April 16, 1978.
