Tennis coverage poor

The Spokesman-Review

I have been thoroughly disappointed this tennis season with the lack of coverage the Spokesman has provided for the high school players. It has been a very successful season, yet it seems the Spokesman can only cover the losses of the GSL. I participated in the regional tournament and will be representing Spokane as the number two seed going into state. The number two seed going into state on the boys side is also representing Spokane.

However, it seems losses were all the Spokesman could report on. The boys representing the GSL had more success this year than they have in the past several years, advancing two singles and one doubles team to state. The Spokesman could only report on the losses on the second day. Regardless of their performance the second day, they were moving on to state, which is an opportunity not easily obtained.

The girls had a formidable amount of success with three of the four singles players going to state coming out of Spokane. Also, a doubles team from Spokane will be the number two seed going into state. If you ask me, this does not appear to be a “struggling” GSL. The lack of praise from the Spokesman for Spokane’s own representatives in the tournament moving on to state was demoralizing.

In addition, it was ridiculous for the article summing up the tournament to be titled, “GSL struggles at Regional tourney.” (May 23) This is not even an accurate representation of how the GSL actually performed at the regional tournament. Nowhere in the article was it even mentioned that Lewis and Clark’s girls team had won the regional tournament for the first time in many years if not in fact for the first time. The Spokesman failed to report on the successes of the players representing the GSL and for this I am greatly insulted. I know all of the players from Spokane and myself worked extremely hard in the tournament, and to receive an article such as the one we did as credit to our efforts and success is disappointing. The Spokesman is in dire need of better reporting when it comes to the sport of tennis. Hopefully by next year, the Spokesman will have realized this.
