Grading the Cougs

The Spokesman-Review

Quarterback: B+

It’s amazing how much better a quarterback can play when he actually has a lead.

Running backs: A-

The star of the game, Jerome Harrison, is hurt only by his fumble that turned into a Bruins TD.

Wide receivers: B

Did a better job as blockers for Harrison than pass-catchers, but that’s what was needed.

Offensive line: A+

Ran over the UCLA defense as if it were a Pinto on a Los Angeles freeway.

Defensive line: B+

Bruce led the Cougars in tackles and the unit led the charge in limiting a potent ground game.

Linebackers: B-

Not many big-time plays, but they, too, get credit for keeping UCLA in check.

Secondary: B-

Struggled in pass coverage at times, but effective in putting on big hits when necessary.

Special teams: C

Basler continues to struggle and punt returns have become an adventure every week.

Coaching: A-

Most had left the Cougars for dead, but with a nice game plan, WSU lives for another day.
