After two decades of performing in the area, Coeurimba is well known for invigorating, rhythm-driven, infectious dance parties.

But this weekend, Coeur d’Alene’s longest-standing African-style marimba band is hosting two special parties – CD release parties for its newest album, “Knock On Wood.”

Recorded locally at the Black Coffee studio, “Knock On Wood” is from a live performance by Coeurimba at The Shop last summer.

The recording captures all of the contagious energy – hand claps, hollers and whoo-has – expected at any Coeurimba performance.

The six-piece band plays free-spirited, traditional Zimbabwean tunes and original compositions on large wooden xylophone-like instruments called marimbas that were made by Coeurimba member Steve Meyer with woods native to Africa, Asia and Honduras.

Coeurimba appears tonight at 7 p.m. at Hastings, 101 E. Appleway in Coeur d’Alene, and on Saturday at 2 p.m. at The Shop, 924 S. Perry. Both shows are free.

With a Twist

Also at The Shop this week is six- and 12-string guitarist and singer John Twist.

The Oregon-based guitar guru has a strong reputation in the region for a deep baritone voice that soars over a strangely enticing combination of driving Celtic music, sweaty blues, sorrowful mountain music and joyful pop.

Twist’s latest album, “The Vine Grows Back,” is a keen display of his virtuoso fretwork and sophisticated songwriting.

Catch Twist on Thursday at 7 p.m. at The Shop. No cover.
