Mildred Smith

Spokane

Memorial service for Mildred Juanita Smith, 86, was held Saturday at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Smith died last Tuesday. She was born in Pender, Neb., and grew up in Avery, Idaho.

She was a Camp Fire girl and was a delivery girl for the Spokane Chronicle in Avery. In 1932 her family moved to Spokane, and in 1934, she graduated from North Central High School. She also had extended credits from Spokane College and Denver Community College.

She married Maurice Smith in 1940.

Mrs. Smith was a civilian employee with the Air Force, last stationed at Lowery Air Force Base in Aurora, Colo. She and her husband returned to Spokane in their retirement years.

She was involved in the community as a volunteer, including as hospitality chairman for Rockwood Manor. She was involved with Shriners Hospital for Children, St. Stephen’s Church Choir and Altar Guild, the PEO, Masons, Order of the Eastern Star and the Hillyard Belles. She also was involved in the development of the Southside Senior Center.

She was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and a former member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Survivors include three sons, Charles Smith of Tekoa, Wash., Ronald Smith of Spokane and Geoffrey Smith of La Grande, Ore.; three siblings, Audrey Crumbaker of Spokane, Charlotte Wischstadt of Chula Vista, Calif., and Thomas Wurth of Lacey, Wash.; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

John Reeves

Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for John Charles Reeves, 60, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home, Hayden Chapel, with a reception at Yates Hayden Chapel Gathering Center.

Mr. Reeves, who was born in Humboldt, Neb., died Sept. 27.

He grew up in Castleford, Idaho, and received a Bachelor of Arts in English from the College of Idaho, in Caldwell.

He married Diane Tucker in 1968.

Mr. Reeves taught in public schools for 15 years, including in Burns, Ore., for one year, and at Idaho City and Leadore, Idaho, schools for seven years.

He moved to Bonners Ferry with his family in 1984 and worked on refinishing projects.

Mr. Reeves was a member of the Hayden Lake Eagles Lodge and Coeur d’Alene Bible Church.

He enjoyed fishing, reading, cooking, camping and hunting.

Survivors include his wife; a son, JD Reeves; a sister, Vi Leverich of Purdy, Mich.; three brothers, Mack Reeves of Kimberly, Idaho, Virgil Reeves of Filer, Idaho, and Guy Reeves of Georgetown, Texas; and two grandsons.

Leome Temple

Post Falls

Memorial service for Leome Gwendolyn Temple, 81, will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Nazarene in Post Falls. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Temple, who was born in Hallock, Minn., died Sept, 27.

She attended school in Libby, Mont., before graduating from high school in Spokane.

She was working at a printing office when she met her future husband, William Temple. They were married in 1958.

She attended the Church of the Nazarene in Post Falls and enjoyed gardening, reading and playing the piano.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Anelle Slate-Wright of Post Falls; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Robert ‘Spec’ Smith

Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Robert John “Spec” Smith, 82, will be today at 11 a.m. at Kellogg Funeral Service with inurnment at Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg.

Mr. Smith, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday.

He lived in California, and in 1944 married Hope Hearn. They moved to Wallace in 1948.

Mr. Smith worked as a shifter at the zinc plant for the Bunker Hill Mining Co. for 32 years. He later moved to Coeur d’Alene.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Bunker Hill 20-year Club, and the Pinehurst Lions.

He enjoyed good food, dancing, hunting, fishing and camping.

His wife died in 2000.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Schutt of Post Falls and Nancy Smith of Boise; a brother, Bert Smith of Coeur d’Alene; three sisters, Norma Cook of Coeur d’Alene, Winnie Jensen of St. Maries and Ivie Wallace of Salem, Ore.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren ; and his companion, Goldie Williams of Pinehurst, Idaho.

Harold Long

Post Falls

Service for Harold O. Long, 69, was held Monday at Real Life Ministries in Post Falls. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls.

Mr. Long, who was born in Pottersville, Mo., died Saturday.

He moved to Idaho in his youth, and in 1960 married Donna Kandler.

They moved to Post Falls 13 years ago, and he worked as a truck driver for BHP Steel in Spokane.

Mr. Long was a member of Real Life Ministries in Post Falls.

He enjoyed horses, dogs and hunting.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years; eight children, Rick Long and Tammy Schaak, both of Boise, Danny Long of Spokane, Kathy Rodriguez of Twin Falls, Vicki Laititi of Dalton Gardens, Idaho, Carolyn Sims of Post Falls, Lexie Ah Hee of Hayden Lake, Idaho, and Bobbi Heitstuman of Uniontown, Pa.; three sisters, Gladolia Endicott, Ernestine Fox and Pauline Redburn; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Margie (Burden) Hill

Palouse, Wash

Service for Margie M. (Burden) Hill, 79, will be today at 1 p.m. at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow with burial at the Viola (Idaho) Cemetery.

Mrs. Hill, who was born in Potlatch, Idaho, died Friday.

She grew up in Potlatch and in 1944 graduated from high school there. She married Howard Hill in 1944.

The couple lived on the family farm near Viola, and she was a homemaker.

She enjoyed boating, sewing, bowling and spending winters in Yuma, Ariz.

Mrs. Hill was a member and past president of the Palouse Round Table and made various craft items for the group’s annual sale.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Donna Hickman of Moses Lake; a sister, Beverly Melior of Spokane; a brother, Eugene Burden of Portland; a granddaughter and two great-grandsons.

Kenneth Clark

Rockford

Viewing for Kenneth F. Clark, 85, will be Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home, with service at 1 p.m. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Clark, a lifelong resident of Rockford, died Wednesday.

He graduated from Rockford High School and was a lifelong farmer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Clark; four stepchildren, Jeff Ross of Redmond, Wash., Jan Smith and John Ross, both of Spokane, and Debbie Burns of Idaho Falls; and a brother, Howard Clark.

Pollyanna ‘Peg’ Childress

St. Maries

Graveside service for Pollyanna “Peg” (Harris) Childress, 72, will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries. Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Childress, who was born in Orofino, Idaho, died Wednesday.

She grew up in St. Maries and moved to Sacramento, Calif., and worked at Bill’s 24 Hour Cafe.

She also was a homemaker and had several marriages which ended in divorce.

In 1970 she married Albert Childress, and they lived in Sacramento. They moved to St. Maries after her husband’s retirement in 1988.

Her husband died in January.

Mrs. Childress enjoyed visiting, mushroom hunting, baseball and TV soap operas.

Survivors include three sons, Joe Lewis and Mike Chase, both of St. Maries; a daughter, Jeanne Randall; four stepchildren, Thomas Childress of North Highland, Calif., and Daniel, Susan and Gaye Childress, all of Sacramento; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Harold ‘Ben’ Benedict

Kellogg

Memorial service for Harold Edison “Ben” Benedict, 77, was Saturday at the Silver Valley Church of the Nazarene.

Mr. Benedict, who was born in Flora, Ore., died Sept. 30.

He graduated from high school in Anatone, Wash., and attended electrician school while serving as a chief petty officer with the Navy Seabees. He served in World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Mr. Benedict then worked as an electrician and moved to the Silver Valley in 1996 from Clarkston.

He was a longtime member of the National Rifle Association and was a member of the Silver Valley Church of the Nazarene in Kellogg.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, re-loading ammo and the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; five children, Krista, Becca, Jim, Dan and Dorian; three stepsons, Larry, Danny and Randy; a brother, Reed Benedict of Soap Lake, Wash.; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mabel Gabbert

Spokane

Committal service for Mabel V. Gabbert, 96, will be today at 1 p.m. at Mabton (Wash.) City Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gabbert, who died last Tuesday, was born in Mabton. She was a longtime resident of Spokane and worked as a nurse in a hospital.

She was a member of the Deer Park Seventh-day Adventist Church and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include six children, Stanley Johnston and Joyce Knutson, both of Springdale, Ralph Tipton of Spokane, John Johnston of Sunnyside, Wash., Darlene Cooley of Wapato, Wash., and Carol Costa of San Diego; 20 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Jack Cook

Spokane

Memorial service for Jack E. Cook, 68, will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Starr Road Baptist Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cook, who died Thursday, was a lifelong resident of Spokane.

He graduated from West Valley High School in 1956.

In 1997 he retired from the Spokane Steel Foundry after 38 years.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Oleta; two sons, Gary and Robert Cook; a daughter, Cathy Chapman; a brother, Jim Cook of Spokane; two sisters, Leta Walters of Spokane and Marsha Weatherford of Alaska; and five grandchildren.

Patricia (Conolly) Davenport

Sandpoint

Private service for Patricia Ann (Conolly) Davenport, 64, will be held at a later date. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Davenport, who was born in Battle Creek, Mich., died last Tuesday.

She married Dorlan Davenport in 1979, and they lived in Brookings and Reedsport on the Oregon Coast.

The couple moved to Sandpoint earlier this year to be near family.

She enjoyed cooking, walking, fishing and crabbing on the Umpqua River, and teaching her granddaughter to bake cookies. She was known for her gardening skills.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Theresa DuPerault of Sandpoint, Caroline Eppler of Athol, Idaho, and Dena Hadley of Eugene, Ore.; four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter .

Lee Zimmer

Spokane

Funeral for Lee Charles Zimmer, 85, will be today at 2 p.m. at Hennessey Valley Funeral Home, with burial at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Zimmer, who was born in Spokane, died Friday.

He attended Whitman Elementary School and Rogers High School. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II and served with the Seabees in the South Pacific and Okinawa.

Mr. Zimmer worked for Kaiser Aluminum Trentwood in the maintenance department for 35 years.

He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife, Nora; a daughter, Laura Farnham of Moscow, Idaho; two sons Lee Zimmer Jr. and Charles Zimmer, both of Spokane; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Paul Detwiler

Spokane

Memorial service for Paul Detwiler, 80, was Sunday at Northwest Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Mr. Detwiler, who died Thursday, was born in Columbus, Ohio. He was a resident of Spokane County for 50 years.

He served in the Navy during World War II and later joined the Air Force.

Mr. Detwiler was a member of the Northwest Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Survivors include his wife, Louise; four daughters, Cindy Patton of Bremerton, Susan Kirk and Debbie Keck, both of Seattle, and Dana McKenna of Spokane; two stepsons, Steven Wagner of Spokane and John Wagner of California; a stepdaughter, Jody Allen of Coeur d’Alene; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Alice Napier

Spokane

Memorial service for Alice J. Napier, 93, will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Hennessey Valley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Napier, who was born in Cando, N.D., died Sept. 24. She was a resident of Spokane Valley for 58 years.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Stephen, died in 1979.

Survivors include two daughters, Veva McMaster of Greenacres and Cathi Napier-Johnson of Tucson, Ariz.; three grandsons and two great-grandsons.
