Lake City topples Sandpoint

The first time Lake City played Sandpoint this season, the Timberwolves earned their first win over the Bulldogs since 1997.

Tuesday night in Sandpoint, they showed it wasn’t fluke, downing the Bulldogs in five games, 18-25, 25-23, 14-25, 25-21, 15-12.

Setter Lauren Stern had 41 assists and 10 digs to lead Lake City. Kristi Tuntland added 10 kills and Amy Lawson had four blocks.

The Timberwolves stayed unbeaten in league at 10-0, 11-2 overall, while snapping Sandpoint’s string of seven straight league titles.

In other IEL matches, Scarlett Pruitt came up with 18 digs as Lakeland powered to a sweep at Lewiston, 25-14, 25-16, 25-20. Ashley Beck had 13 kills and four aces to lead the Hawks (4-5, 9-6). … Meredith Dolny had seven kills and 11 digs and sister Maddie Dolny added nine assists as Moscow (5-3, 9-5) knocked off visiting Post Falls 25-8, 25-21, 25-15. The Bears had 17 aces in the match, with Emily Dostal collecting a half dozen. … In the Intermountain League, St. Maries clinched at least a share of the league title and the No. 1 seed into the District 1 3A tournament by sweeping three hard-fought games from visiting Timberlake, 25-21, 26-24, 25-23. The Lumberjacks, who have two league matches remaining in their regular season, got 10 kills from Kelsi Lee and 27 assists from Erin Sather. … In the North Star League, Kootenai remained unbeaten in league play by sweeping Post Falls Christian at Harrison, 25-1, 25-13, 25-14. Darcy Collins had 12 kills and Cassie Scheffelmaier dished off 12 assists for the Warriors (9-0, 12-1). … Wallace stayed a game back of Kootenai by sweeping host Coeur d’Alene Charter, 25-11, 25-12, 25-13. Shala Wild served up seven aces to lead the Miners. … Clark Fork needed five games to upset Lakeside in Plummer, 25-17, 20-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-13. Jenna Gauthier had 16 kills and eight aces to lead the Wampus Cats (5-4, 7-7). It was Clark Fork’s second five-game win over the Knights this season.

Girls Soccer

Sandpoint clinched at least a share of the Inland Empire regular season championship by earning a 1-1 tie with visiting Lakeland. The Bulldogs (8-0-2, 10-2-3) can clinch the title outright with either a win in their final two games, or a loss by Moscow. Senior Brooke Donnelly scored midway through the first half for Sandpoint; Katie Douglas knotted the score with her goal in the 74th minute. … Holly Meyer’s second-half goal gave Lake City a 4-1 lead over visiting Post Falls, then held off a furious rush in the final minutes as the Spartans scored twice. – a lead the Timberwolves (4-2-2, 4-5-3) saw evaporate in the final four minutes of play. Junior forward Erin Liberatore scored all three goals for Post Falls (2-7-0, 6-7). … Lewiston (1-7-0, 3-7-2) earned its first league win of the season with an upset of visiting Coeur d’Alene (4-3-2, 6-5-2). The Bengals got two goals from Janie Perez to give Greg Hilmes his first-ever victory over Couer d’Alene. The Vikings avoided the shutout when Amanda Sportado scored in the 69th minute.

Boys Soccer

Coeur d’Alene remained unbeaten in Inland Empire League play by stopping visiting Lewiston, 2-1. Kyle Wise scored on a penalty kick in the 74th minute for the Vikings (8-0-1, 10-2-1). Casey Kirk put Coeur d’Alene on the board with a first-half goal, but the Bengals (1-6-1, 1-6-2) tied the match on Reny Follett’s goal six minutes into the second half. … Sandpoint (7-2-1, 10-2-1) stayed a game back of league-leading Coeur d’Alene by blanking Lakeland, 3-0 at Rathdrum. Chris Hepperly’s goal 12 minutes into the game proved to be the game-winner. … Ashley Evans set up a first-half goal and scored the game-winner on a penalty kick with :30 left in the game to lift Post Falls (3-5-2, 6-5-3) to its first-ever win over visiting Lake City, 2-1.
