LOOKING AHEAD
The Greater Spokane League’s 3A schools grab the spotlight this week. East Valley has a chance to put a headlock on a playoff spot if it can earn a win over North Central tonight at Albi – and if Lewis and Clark wins on the road at Clarkston.
That scenario would give EV a two-game edge with four to play and would leave Clarkston, NC, Cheney and West Valley battling for the final spot. If NC and Clarkston can pull upsets, then the last four weeks get really tight.

In the news
In a meeting of two of the nation’s finest prep cross country runners last weekend in Yakima’s SunFair Invitational, Bellarmine Prep’s speedy Brie Felnagle beat Zoe Nelson of Flathead, Mont. Felnagle trailed by five seconds with a half-mile to go, but her state-title, 800-meter speed produced a come-from-behind course record, 17 minutes, 11 seconds to Nelson’s 17:22. The former record of 17:24 was set by Rogers’ Sara Schwald in 1990 … The meet introduced another contender for the boys State 4A title. Auburn Riverside beat Eisenhower 25-29. Lewis and Clark placed fifth with 61 points. Mead’s girls finished seventh … After re-scoring meets, results changed in GSL and GNL cross country contests. Shadle Park’s girls actually beat North Central 27-29 last Wednesday. It was incorrectly reported as a 25-30 Indians win. The result moves the Highlanders to 6-3, behind unbeatens Lewis and Clark and Mt. Spokane and once-beaten Mead … Riverside’s boys and girls defeated Pullman in their GNL openers, not vice versa. That leaves the Rams unbeaten at 2-0 and both Pullman teams at 1-1 in league. … Qwest and the Seattle Seahawks have teamed to hold a statewide volunteer competition for high school football players. Each school nominates one player, who, by doing 40 hours of non-profit work, earns $500 for the school. The player then competes for a $5,000 scholarship. The players and schools chosen so far are Jacob Aspenleiter, North Central; Nick Brownowski, Rosalia; Matt Fisk, Davenport; Brandon Harder, Tekoa; Curtis Heyamoto, Ferris; Tommy Kadoya, Central Valley; Willie Kunkel, Okanogan; Kris O’Connor, University; Austin Peaker, Chewelah; Brad Stenmetz, Rogers; Ian Wagner, Reardan; and Tyler Young, Oakesdale. Players can still sign up through their coach or at www.seahawks.com.
