WSU upsets No. 8 UCLA in women’s soccer, 1-0

Alix Rustrum scored the match-winning goal Friday to give the Washington State women’s soccer team a 1-0 upset victory over No. 8 UCLA (9-4-0, 2-1-0) in a Pacific-10 Conference match.

This was the first Cougars win over the Bruins since 1993.

WSU’s (6-5-2, 1-2-0) goal came at the 15-minute mark when Rustrum, the Cougars’ leading scorer, placed a shot to the lower-right corner inside the 18-yard box.

Cougars goalkeeper Katie Hultin recorded nine saves in her fifth shutout of the season.

•Freshman midfielder Heather Horn scored twice and senior striker Ashley Pryor scored once to lead Gonzaga (9-6-0, 1-1-0) to a 3-1 West Coast Conference victory over visiting Loyola Marymount (7-4-3, 1-1-0), ending the Lions’ five-game winning streak.

Bulldogs’ goalkeeper Ashley Haugen posted eight saves in picking up the win.

•Jen Hamann put a shot into the left corner off a pass from Chelse Zegzula as Eastern Washington (4-7-2, 1-0-1) defeated visiting Idaho State (5-4-3, 0-1-1) 1-0.

The Eagles earned the Big Sky victory despite being out-shot 15-8.

•Sarah April scored her first goal of the season, but Idaho was unable to pick up its first Big West conference victory, losing 3-2 to visiting UC Irvine (4-9-2, 1-4-0).

Melissa Martinazzi also scored for the Vandals (2-10-0, 0-4-0), tying the score at 2 on a penalty kick in the 80th minute. UC Irvine’s Mackenzie Beahm scored the game-winning goal 15 seconds later.

•Kristen Kendall and Jari Petrie had two goals apiece as North Idaho (8-6-1) defeated Wenatchee Valley (1-9-0) in a commanding 6-1 NWAACC victory at Wenatchee.

Ashlee Strong and Alicia Ward each added a goal and Allyson Mapother contributed two assists.

•Community Colleges of Spokane (8-1-0) moved into first place in the NWAACC with a 3-1 victory over visiting Skagit Valley (4-4-1).

Jill Giroux, who has scored in the last five matches, scored the Sasquatch’ first goal and Heather Howard assisted Laura May in the last two.

Men’s soccer

Nick Loyd scored once in the first half and once in the second, leading CC Spokane (4-1-4 NWAACC) to a 3-0 victory over visiting Skagit Valley (3-6-0).

C.J. Moe added a second-half goal and goalkeeper Kris Wright recorded nine saves in the shutout.

•Luis Aguilar scored at the 64-minute mark, giving visiting San Francisco (7-3-1, 2-2-0 WCC) a 1-0 edge over Gonzaga (4-8-0, 0-4-0).

The outcome extended the Bulldogs’ WCC losing streak to 12 games over the past three seasons.

•Few shots were taken as North Idaho (6-4-1) fell 4-1 to Wenatchee Valley (7-3-1) in NWAACC play at Wenatchee.

The Knights out-shot North Idaho 9-4.

Jake Walker assisted Mike Wold in the second half for the Cardinals’ only goal.

Volleyball

Sarah Meek led Idaho with a team-high 16 kills, adding 10 blocks, as the Vandals (12-5, 5-3) picked up their fifth straight Big West win with a three game sweep at UC Riverside (9-9, 1-7).

Brooke Haeberle and Kati Tikker chipped in nine kills apiece and Meghan Brown led the defense with 14 digs.

•Christina Albers recorded 58 assists in a four-game Eastern Washington (13-5, 4-2) Big Sky victory over visiting Montana State (11-6, 5-1).

Megan Kitterman led the offense with 13 kills while Andrea Verdoljak led the defensive efforts with 18 digs.

•Julie Marsh totaled 16 kills and Katy Schrader added 10 kills and four block assists as Whitworth (14-3, 7-2) held off visiting Pacific (2-15, 1-8) 30-23, 25-30, 30-21, 30-18 in Northwest Conference play.

•Top-ranked Washington (14-0, 6-0) defeated Arizona State (7-8, 2-5) in three games, continuing the Huskies unbeaten Pac-10 and overall record.

Senior outside hitter Sonja Tomaseveic, who leads the Huskies in nearly every statistical category, suffered a hand injury Thursday and underwent surgery Friday. She is expected to be sidelined 4-5 weeks.

•Kim Glass had 15 kills and four aces to lead No. 22 Arizona (11-6, 3-4 Pac-10) in a sweep over visiting Washington State (3-16, 0-6).

Kelly Rosin led the Cougars with 14 kills. Jennifer Todd and Jen Barcus added three blocks each.

•Lauren Armas led the offense with 13 kills in a losing effort as Gonzaga (4-14, 0-5 WCC) fell in three games at Pepperdine (4-9, 2-2).

Emily Gihring led with 15 digs and Lacey Bell added 12 in a solid defensive effort from the Bulldogs.

Hockey

Castlegar’s (9-2-1-0) Chad Mackenzie and Deryck Hamill scored one goal apiece in a 2-0 KIJHL victory over the host Spokane Braves (3-7-1-1) at Planet Ice.
