‘Kill’ misused in baseball

The Spokesman-Review

Am I the only fan offended by the new terminology being tossed around by sportscasters and writers?

Calling an out a “kill” strikes me as highly offensive, especially since we are at war – at which kills are not just part of a game.

The military uses the euphemism “take out” to mean “to kill” in an attempt to lessen the impact taking another’s life has on a soldier. Now baseball is using “kill” to mean “out.” This is callous, insensitive and disgusting. Its misuse brings ultimate import to a mere game and slights the most serious of human actions. The word must be thrown out now, before its use becomes widespread. Baseball’s venerable anthem is “Take Me Out to the Ball game,” not “Take Me Out at the Ball Game.”
