Tips on using your inner hues
Have you been monochromatic for more years than you can remember? If you are ready to try color, start slowly and experiment with the least-expensive items first.
Throw pillows — A splash of color on the couch can perk up any room. Use muted shades in the winter and bright colors for the summer. For balance, be sure to repeat these colors somewhere else in the room.
Accessories — Pick up the colors of your throw pillows with small tabletop accessories such as candy dishes, candles and a stack of colorful coffee-table books. Use coordinating throws on the backs of chairs.
Sheets and towels — You can easily be brave here. Choose sheets in any color that suits your fancy. If you are the private type, cover bright sheets with a sensible bedspread.
Paint one wall — Cheap and easily reversible, painting one wall in your inner color can really give a room a lift and you’ll be able to test-run the color on your mood.
Paint all walls — Still cheap and fairly easy to reverse. Try samples, such as the one-ounce containers you can find at paint stores.
Carpet — Play it safe here. It’s usually not a good idea to carpet the house in strong colors.
