Lyndon Harriman

Democrat

Age: 51

Personal: Raised in Spokane. Married to Peggy Harriman for 33 years. No children, but raised niece and nephew. Currently raising great nephews Colton, 10 and Dylan, 9. Served in U.S.Navy 1972-1973 and is a disabled veteran.

Education: Graduated from Spokane’s University High School in 1971. Bachelor’s degree in education with focus on biology and chemistry from Eastern Washington University, 1978. Master’s degree in education administration from University of Idaho, 1997.

Professional: Canfield Middle School earth science teacher for 27 years.

Political: Served various positions for the Coeur d’Alene Education Association including president, chief negotiator. Served as an Idaho Education Association board member since 1991. Founding member and current president of the Idaho Education Association’s Children Fund, which is a statewide charity that received $500,000 in donations last year. Ran for the Idaho House (Dist. 5) in 2002, losing to Rep.Charles Eberle, R-Post Falls.

Key issues: Education funding: Disappointed in how the Legislature has neglected education by consistently underfunding schools and overregulating them. Health care: Thinks health care has been underfunded and that the state is relying too much on counties to pick up indigent health care costs.

Money raised/spent: $5,714/ $1,532 as of Sept. 30.

Top contributors: PAC for Education of Boise, $1,000; Brotherhood of Electric Workers Local 77 PAC, $200; $100 donation to own campaign.

First priority if elected: To really push the Legislature into having open meetings. The current Legislature has had a tendency to have closed-door meetings that are in violation of the law.

Frank Henderson

Republican

Age: 81

Personal: Married to Lillian Henderson for 55 years. Five grown children: three girls, two boys. Six grandchildren.

Education: Graduated from Racine County School of Agriculture and Domestic Science in 1940. Attended University of Idaho but never graduated because he joined the Illinois National Guard.

Professional: Economic development consultant to government and industry in developing countries. (Russia, Mongolia, Ukraine, Panama, etc.) Former owner/publisher of Post Falls Tribune. Spent 26 years working as advertising manager and marketing director for international pharmaceutical manufactures Schering-Plough and Syntex. Advertising and public relations writer for Skill Corp. Photographer/reporter for Hearst Newspapers wire service. Former Panhandle Area Council chairman, Jobs Plus founding member and former director, former director of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe Development Corp.

Political: Post Falls mayor: 1980-1983. Kootenai County commissioner: 1983-1991, including five years as chairman.

Key issues: The constituents of District 5 have told him the high and growing rate of property taxes is the No. 1 issue. Other issues include guarding against unfunded mandates, high cost of prescription drugs and creating more good paying jobs that have benefits.

Money raised/spent: $16,649/ $11,455 as of Sept. 30.

Top contributors: Idaho Committee on Hospitality and Sports, $1,250; Freedom Fund, Washington, D.C., $500; Coeur d’Alene Mines, $500; Idaho Association of Realtors PAC, $600; Coeur d’Alene Tribe, $250; and $700 personal loan.
