Man sentenced in rape

EVERETT – A man who was linked to a brutal child rape through DNA evidence more than four years after the attack has been sentenced to 17 years and eight months in prison.

Shane Allen Herzog, 29, of Everett, who pleaded guilty in September to two counts of first-degree child rape and one count of first-degree child molestation, committed “an exceptionally brutal crime,” Snohomish County Superior Court Judge George N. Bowden said Thursday.

Investigators wrote in court documents that Herzog seized the 9-year-old girl at a school bus stop in Everett, drove her around the area and sexually assaulted her in numerous locations before letting her go more than four hours later on Jan. 21, 2000.

In April 2002, after Herzog was convicted of felony possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, he had to provide a blood sample and his genetic profile was added to the state’s DNA database.

Herzog was arrested in the rape case last Feb. 13 after his DNA profile matched evidence from the attack on the girl.
