Bemis sparks WSU victory

Brooke Bemis score a pair of first-half goals and Haley Miller added the clincher in the second half as the Washington State Cougars held off Northern Colorado 3-2 in non-conference women’s soccer on Sunday in Pullman.

Bemis, of Coeur d’Alene, scored from 25 yards out at 15:23 after taking a pass from Molly Alexander and added an unassisted score in the 27th minute as the Cougars (2-1-1) took a 2-0 lead.

The Bears (1-4) pulled within a goal on Jody Alvarez’s strike at 37:49, but Miller found the net unassisted in the 84th minute to stretch the lead back to two and wrap up the victory.

•UC Riverside knocked in a pair of first-half goals and goalkeepers Tawny Foggio and Katie Blank made them stand up in a 2-1 non-conference victory over the Eastern Washington Eagles in Riverside, Calif.

Kacie McElrath gave the Highlanders (6-0) a quick lead with a goal in the 9th minute, and Ashlee Stephens stretched the lead to 2-0 with a score 2:35 before halftime.

Amber Luce netted a shot from 10 yards out in the 53rd minute for Eastern (2-4).
