Chester Rice
Richland
Memorial service for Chester D. Rice, 83, will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435, 212 S. David Road, Spokane Valley. Neptune Society is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Rice, a former 37-year resident of Spokane, died Sept. 13 in Richland, his home for a year and a half.
He was born in Sheridan, Wyo., where he graduated from high school in 1941.
He served as a Navy corpsman in World War II from 1942 to 1945, and in the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. He received the Korean War Medal.
Mr. Rice was a independent contractor as a masonry carpenter for 35 years, retiring in 1989.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Barbara; three sons, Daniel Rice of Delhi, Calif., Jon Rice of Modesto, Calif., and Robert Rice of Spokane; a daughter, Carolyn Rice Chamberlan of Nevada City, Calif.; eight stepsons, Spencer and Oliver Rice and Alan and Phil McMahan, all of Spokane, Doug Rice of Yachats, Ore., David McMahan of Ellensburg, Barry McMahan of Seattle and Steve McMahan; two stepdaughters, Leeann Curry of Richland and Jana Teulin of Spokane; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mike Ladish
Spokane
Memorial Mass for Mike S. Ladish, 75, will be today at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Ladish, who died last Friday, was born and raised in Seekonk, Mass. He was a resident of Spokane for 43 years.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean War and was sent to Fairchild Air Force Base after his basic training.
Mr. Ladish was an independent insurance agent for many years.
He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hiking, skiing, canoeing, golfing and bicycling, and his favorite place was the Priest Lake, Idaho, area.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; four daughters, Christine Carbery, Colleen Letsinger, Nancy Smith and Patty Dinger; a brother, Frank; three sisters, Delia of Florida, Anna of Massachusetts and Helen of Texas; and 11 grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the EMTs at Priest Lake or to Catholic Charities.
Lillian (Rogers) Patrick
San Pedro, Calif.
Vigil service for Lillian (Rogers) Patrick, 81, will be today at 7:30 p.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint. Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Sandpoint.
Mrs. Patrick, who was born in Spokane, died Sept. 17.
She grew up in Sandpoint and attended Bonner County schools and married Lee Patrick. He died in 1967.
Mrs. Patrick worked in Sandpoint and Oldtown, Idaho, for many years before moving to San Pedro in 1984.
She was active in the lives of her children when they were growing up and later helped her daughter, Marty operate a home day-care facility.
Mrs. Patrick was a yard-duty volunteer at Holy Trinity School for many years.
She was a lifelong member of the Roman Catholic Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Marty Lyons of San Pedro; two sisters, Connie Greenleaf and Jose Rogers, both of Sandpoint; and two granddaughters.
Meda (Tharp) VanDyke
Metaline Falls, Wash.
Memorial service for Meda Marie (Tharp) VanDyke, 87, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Assembly of God Church in Metaline Falls. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. VanDyke died Sept. 13.
She was born in Lewiston, and when she was 8, her family moved to Colville, where she grew up and attended schools.
In 1934 she married Lawrence VanDyke in Spokane and the couple moved to Metaline Falls in 1938. The following year they purchased the Mountain View Dairy. The couple converted it into a cattle ranch, and at its peak the ranch boasted a herd of more than 100 cattle.
Mrs. VanDyke, who enjoyed riding horses, actively maintained her horse and a small herd of cattle until a week before her death. She also worked as a cook at local restaurants.
She was a Diamond Driller Helper for a short period in the late 1970s.
She attended Metaline Falls Assembly of God Church, where she worked on church projects and was a past member of the board.
She enjoyed gardening.
Her husband died in 1991.
Survivors include a son, Jim VanDyke of Metaline Falls; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Joanne (Alcorn) Graves
Spokane Valley
Funeral for Joanne R. (Alcorn) Graves, 71, will be today at 2 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home.
Mrs. Graves, who died Monday, was born in Spokane and had been a resident of Spokane County for 50 years.
She married Ira Graves in 1956 in Coeur d’Alene. He died in 1999.
Mrs. Graves was a licensed practical nurse at a state hospital and, before she became ill, enjoyed walking and bicycling.
Survivors include a son, Michael Graves of Port Orchard, Wash.; a daughter, Susan Smith, and a brother, Robert Alcorn, both of Spokane; and a grandson.
Viola Wise
Spokane
Graveside service for Viola Wise, 84, will be today at 2 p.m. at Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Wise died Tuesday.
She was born in Spokane, and was a descendent of Robert E. Lee.
She had worked at the White Pine Lumber Co. until its closure.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Roberta Newton of Bothell, Wash.; a brother, Rex Bishop; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mary (Podlas) Peterson
Sandpoint
Service for Mary B. (Podlas) Peterson, 92, will be today at 11 a.m. at Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint, with burial at Lakeview Cemetery in Sandpoint.
Mrs. Peterson, who was born in Elk, died Monday.
She grew up in Camden, Wash., and graduated from high school in Elk.
She married Henry “Hank” Peterson in 1930, and they lived in Priest Lake, Idaho, where he was a Forest Service ranger for the Kalispell District for 10 years.
Mrs. Peterson moved to Sandpoint in 1940.
Her husband preceded her in death.
She was devoted to her family and enjoyed spending time with neighbors, church activities, caring for her home and gardening.
Survivors include two sons, Theodore Peterson of Hamilton, Mont., and Richard Peterson of Heron, Mont.; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Jewel (McBeth) Pedey
Tum Tum, Wash.
Funeral for Jewel L. (McBeth) Pedey, 79, will be today at 11 a.m. at Heritage Funeral Home.
Mrs. Pedey, a 52-year resident of the Spokane area, died Sunday.
She was born in Sandpoint and was raised in Oakland, Calif., where she attended Castlemont High School. She later moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, where she met and married her husband of 58 years, Victor Pedey.
Mrs. Pedey worked in various accounting positions for several years.
She enjoyed painting watercolors and oil paintings.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Adrian and Dana Pedey, both of Nine Mile Falls; a daughter, Vicky Whitney of Spokane; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Carolyn Natwick

Visitation and viewing for Carolyn Louise (Hutchins) Natwick, 71, will be today from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Riplinger Funeral Home. Funeral will be Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 401 W. Regina.
Mrs. Natwick, who died Monday, was a lifelong resident of Spokane.
She attended Holmes Elementary and graduated from North Central High School, where she met her husband.
She worked at Early Dawn Creamery, Anderson Moving and Storage and Telco Business Services.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Charles; six children, Vicki McGee of Auburn, Wash., Jan Kent of Temple, Texas, Kim Scarsella of Normandy Park, Wash., Jill Hurst of Spokane, Steve Natwick of Seattle and Danette Van Ditto of Renton, Wash.; a brother, Earl Hutchins of Highland, Calif.; a sister, Joyce Bohnet of Las Vegas; two stepsisters, Leola Mittlestadt and Mardella Coil; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Wilma (Barr) Newton
Post Falls
Visitation for Wilma R. (Barr) Newton, 79, will be Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene. Service will be held Oct. 1 in Sioux City, Iowa.
Mrs. Newton, who was born in Sioux City, died Tuesday.
She grew up in Sioux City and married Harry Newton in 1942. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Newton lived in Sacramento until moving to Post Falls five months ago.
She was a member of the River City Anglers in Sioux City and enjoyed dining out, boating, crafts, gardening and was a Sacramento Kings basketball fan.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Newton of Sioux City and William Newton of Corning, Calif.; two daughters, Kay Hamilton of Post Falls and Rose Perry of Antelope, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Craig Bonser
Spokane
Memorial service for Craig M. Bonser, 55, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.
Mr. Bonser, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday.
A lifelong resident of the Spokane area, he served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a master sergeant with the Marine Corps and worked as a security guard.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; a son, Shawn Bonser of Spokane; a daughter, Shannon Kallstrom of Sedro Wooley, Wash.; two brothers, Patrick Bonser of Mesa, Ariz., and Brad Bonser of Spokane; a sister, Vickie Nye of Greenacres; and two grandchildren.
Doris Brizius
Spokane
Graveside service for Doris E. Brizius, 57, will be today at 1 p.m. at Fairmount Memorial Park. Community Cremation handled the arrangements.
Mrs. Brizius, who was born in Dayton, Wash., died Saturday.
She had lived in Washington state periodically for 44 years, during her husband’s career with in the military.
She married David Brizius in 1978 in Spokane.
Mrs. Brizius worked for the city of Spokane as a clerk for 10 years. She enjoyed stitchery, stamp collecting and geneaology.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Bill and Ken, both of Spokane; two daughters, Tricia of Spokane and Kathy of Claremore, Okla.; and five grandchildren.
Velma Poirier
Spokane
Service for Velma “Val” M. Poirier, 81, will be today at 2 p.m. at Ball and Dodd-North.
Mrs. Poirier died Sunday.
She was born in Deer Park and in1941 graduated from Deer Park High School.
She moved to Spokane that year and worked at John W. Graham until 1945. She married Bud Poirier in 1946 and became a homemaker.
Mrs. Poirer was a member of the Spokane Sewing Club.
Her husband died in 2000.
Survivors include a daughter, Cathy Giannou; two sons, Mike and Mark Poirier; a sister, Phyllis Ormsby; and seven granddaughters.

Christopher Hemminger
Reardan, Wash.
Memorial service for Christopher J. Hemminger, 15, will be today at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Reardan. Strate Funeral Home of Davenport is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hemminger died Saturday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
He was a sophomore at Reardan High School and enjoyed wrestling, dirt bikes and snowboarding.
Survivors include his parents, Renee Engh of Reardan and Dave Engh of Arlington, Wash.; a sister, Heather Bentz of Reardan; his grandparents, Robert Bentz of Tennessee and Harlaina Fischer of Monroe, Wash.

Alan Rebillard
Spokane
Memorial service for Alan B. Rebillard, 63, will be today at 2 p.m. at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Rebillard’s body was found Sept. 16 at his home.
He was born in Lewiston and served in the Navy during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Rebillard worked as a welder for a manufacturing company and had a band, Fat Albert, that played throughout the Northwest.
Survivors include his daughters, Jody and Debra McKee, both of Spokane; and three grandchildren.
Lydia (Tallman) Osgood
Valley, Wash.
Memorial service for Lydia M. Osgood, 71, will be today at 11 a.m. at Addy (Wash.) New Life Christian Center. Neptune Society is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Osgood, who died Sept. 9, was born in Cusick, Wash. She was a resident of Valley for 38 years.
She graduated from Cusick High School in 1951.
Mrs. Osgood owned a ranch in Valley for 38 years, where she raised cattle, horses and a variety of other animals. She enjoyed horseback riding, driving with Volunteer Chore Services, reading, playing cards and traveling.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Victor Proszek, Sheridan Pyeatt and Oscar Osgood.
Survivors include a son, Troy Pyeatt and a daughter, Pat Paladin, both of Valley; a sister, Anna Fields of Newport, Wash.; three brothers, Arthur Tallman of Spokane Valley, and Dale Tallman and James Cooper, both of Spokane; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Millard Goude
Hooper, Wash.
Memorial service for Millard Eldon Goude, 84, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Hooper Hotel. Danekas Funeral Home, Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Goude, a lifelong area farmer and rancher in Hooper, died Sept. 9.
Born in Hooper, he graduated from Lacrosse (Wash.) High School and moved to California. After his father became ill, he returned to take over the operation of the family ranch.
Survivors include three sons, Jamey Goude of Colbert, David Goude of Walla Walla and Paul Goude of Hooper; and nine grandchildren.
