The Spokesman-Review

Western Washington scored 18 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to rally for a 28-21 victory over Central Washington in the “Battle at Seattle” played in Qwest Stadium Saturday night.

The Vikings trailed 21-10 entering the final period but then scored on a 6-yard pass from Steve Nichols to Andy Olson, Michael Koenen’s 46-yard field goal and, finally, on Jake Carlyle’s 3-yard run with 1:55 remaining.

Western (3-1 overall, 1-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter on Koenen’s 48-yard field goal and another Nichols-to-Olson scoring pass of 18 yards. However, Central (1-4, 0-1) scored the next three touchdowns, two coming on runs of 1 and 15 yards by Emilio Iniquez and another on Dan Lapinsky’s 6-yard pass to Aaron Hineline.

Pacific Lutheran 24, Wisconsin-River Falls 21: Mark McCall’s 3-yard touchdown run with 2:13 remaining in the third quarter proved to be the deciding points in the Lutes’ (2-0) victory over the Falcons (0-3) at Puyallup, Wash.

The Lutes won despite having two touchdowns called back because of penalties. PLU’s defense returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown and recovered two fumbles to preserve the win.

Puget Sound 34, La Verne 14: Three first-half turnovers led to 21 Logger points, propelling Puget Sound to a victory over the Leopards at Tacoma.

The win puts the Loggers at 3-0 on the year, giving Puget Sound their best start to the season since 1987. La Verne falls to 1-2 overall.

After scoring only 22 points in their first two games, the Loggers offense got rolling against La Verne, putting up 358 total yards of offense on their way to a season-high 34 points.

Quarterback Andy Carlson threw for two scores and ran for another.
