Brewers 10, Pirates 2: At Pittsburgh, Carlos Lee homered and drove in four runs in his first big game since an off-season trade, and Doug Davis pitched effectively over six innings in Milwaukee’s rout of Pittsburgh.

Astros 4, Cardinals 1: At Houston, Andy Pettitte allowed only a solo homer to Reggie Sanders in a strong six-inning season debut, and Mike Lamb’s two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth sent Houston to a win over St. Louis.

Braves 2, Marlins 1 (13): At Miami, Chipper Jones homered on the first pitch of the 13th inning, and seven Atlanta pitchers shut out Florida for the final 11 1/3 innings to help the Braves win.

Reds 9, Mets 5: At Cincinnati, Joe Randa provided an encore to his dramatic opening-day homer, hitting a bases-loaded single and a grand slam that powered Cincinnati to a victory over New York.

Padres 14, Rockies 6: At Denver, Brian Giles homered for the second straight game and had five RBIs, and San Diego battered Colorado’s bullpen for seven runs in the seventh inning of a victory over the Rockies.

Dodgers 10, Giants 4: At San Francisco, Jose Valentin hit a three-run homer and Olmedo Saenz drove in three runs in Los Angeles’ victory over San Francisco. Valentin and Milton Bradley also had run-scoring triples, and Jason Phillips drove in two more runs as the Dodgers avenged their opening day loss to their biggest rival with 14 hits and two late-inning rallies in the rematch.

Diamondbacks 8, Cubs 3: At Phoenix, Troy Glaus homered and drove in three runs, and Jose Cruz Jr. also had three RBIs as Arizona won its first series of the season with a victory over Chicago. Shawn Green also had a two-run single for the Diamondbacks, who were routed 16-6 by the Cubs on Monday, but bounced back to win their next two games.

American League

Red Sox 7, Yankees 3: At New York, Boston rallied for five runs against Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning and beat New York to avoid a season-opening sweep.

Royals 7, Tigers 2: At Detroit, Runelvys Hernandez won his first start in more than a year and Tony Graffanino had four hits to lead Kansas City over Detroit.

White Sox 4, Indians 3: At Chicago, Paul Konerko and Jermaine Dye hit consecutive home runs off Bob Wickman as Chicago rallied with four runs in the ninth inning to beat Cleveland.

Devil Rays 8, Blue Jays 5: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Jorge Cantu capped a six-run, eighth-inning rally with a tie-breaking, three-run homer that gave Tampa Bay a victory over Toronto.

Athletics 9, Orioles 0: At Baltimore, substitute starter Kirk Saarloos pitched six innings of one-hit ball, and rookie Nick Swisher hit two of Oakland’s four homers in a victory over Baltimore. Eric Chavez and Keith Ginter also homered for the Athletics, who effectively bounced back from a 4-0 loss to Baltimore on opening day. Swisher had three hits and drove in three runs in his first career multihomer game. The lone hit against Saarloos was a clean third-inning single to right by Brian Roberts.
