Spreadshirt is a simple idea backed by sophisticated computer programming. With a few clicks on the company’s Web site, customers can design and buy a T-shirt, shirt or jacket in one of 20 garment styles, using graphics from the site or their own art and text.

In addition to letting individuals or groups design their own shirts, Spreadshirt allows its users to create their own “shops” — Web sites featuring their personal designs, with Spreadshirt producing and shipping the goods for a cut of the price.

It’s called viral marketing because of the exponential growth of contacts the Web allows. In Europe, Spreadshirt has 60,000 “shops” linked to the site.
